Dr. T.S. Gunasekaran, Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Director of Esophageal Center at Advocate Lutheran General Children?s Hospital, has been selected to present at the North American Pediatric Gastroenterogy, Hepatology and Nutrition annual meeting, in Orlando, FL, October 20 through 23. This honor has been given to him for his work related to tears (perforations) in the esophagus from a new disease; Eosinophilic (Allergic) Esophagitis.
His findings, after studying three independent cases, all boys 10-15, who displayed chest pain, breathlessness, vomiting, led to the evaluation and diagnosis of perforation. This study indicates that when treating esophageal perforation, it is important to consider the possibility of an Eosinophilic (Allergic) Esophagitis as the cause of the perforation. Conservative management led to complete healing of the perforation in all of these patients.
Based on this research one can conclude that Eosinophilic (Allergic) Esophagitis should be considered in the diagnosis of unexplained tears/perforation in the esophagus especially in boys over ten.
The Esophageal Center at Advocate Lutheran General Children?s Hospital coordinates the diagnostic services and treatments for infants, children, and adolescents by providing multidisciplinary care within one location.
