Would youth football survive a tackling ban? | FOX13Now.com ? Salt ...

09-28-football

By Stephanie Smith

(CNN) ? Fourteen can be a time of total transformation. It is an age when gangly adolescent limbs may morph into lithe, stronger ones. It is when the first signs of adulthood ? breasts, hair (on faces and other places) ? start cropping up.

Fourteen is also the soonest any child should be tackling on a football field, heading a soccer ball, or body checking an opponent on an ice hockey rink, according to a leading concussion expert.

?If kids don?t have axillary (underarm) or pubic hair, they aren?t ready to play,? said Dr. Robert Cantu, a neurosurgeon at Emerson Hospital in Massachusetts and author of a new book, ?Concussion and Our Kids.?

?And I have absolutely no problem with parents who want to hold a child out for longer, say 16 or 18.?

No tackling? No body checking before 14?

Heading a soccer ball before 14 in soccer might be sacrificed ? if studies eventually bear out the debatable link to concussion ? but tackling and body checking essentially define football and hockey.

Limit hits, limit concussions in young brains

In Cantu?s words, ?These are sports in which smashing into your opponent isn?t just a possibility ? it?s the object of the game.?

And there is some substance behind the argument for waiting until 14, says Cantu, not the least of which is protecting young, developing brains. At 14, he says, several things enhance the body?s ability to protect against head trauma.

Before 14, there is a size disparity between the head and the body, causing what concussion experts call a ?bobble-head? effect ? the head snaps back dramatically after it is hit.

?Our youngsters have big heads on very weak necks and that combination sets up the brain for greater injury,? said Cantu, a clinical professor of neurosurgery at Boston University School of Medicine.

However, around age 14, a child?s skull is about 90% the size of an adult?s, and the neck and body are strong enough to steel the head against the force of a blow, according to Cantu. The more developed the neck muscles, the less dramatically the head (and thus the brain) is rocked after a tackle or a body check.

And then there is the issue of brain development, and a protein called myelin. Myelin acts as insulation, a sort of buffer, for nerve fibers in the brain.

By 14, Cantu says children have a ?better myelin-ated? brain, making them less vulnerable to injury.

Of course, such a bold proposition, one that would effectively change the way sports are played, causes a minor stir among experts.

?I don?t know what is magic about the number 14,? said Dr. Julian Bailes, co-director of the NorthShore Neurological Institute. ?People suggest radical solutions, but is it practical? Is it going to be done

Bailes acknowledges the debate as complicated. On one hand is a real need to protect children, on the other the unavoidable and possibly insurmountable cultural questions that enter the discussion.

?What does the sporting public want and what is something we can really accomplish?? said Bailes, who also is chairman of the Pop Warner medical advisory board. ?As a society, as sporting fans and participants, are we ready to say we?re not going to play football??

Apart from the cultural implications of placing broad limits on contact, there also is the question of what age-specific limits on hitting actually imply about a child?s long-term risk for brain damage.

There is no definitive set of risk factors for diseases like chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a dementia-like illness that is associated with blows to the head ? although cases as young as 17 have been identified ? and no clues yet from the scientific community about when and precisely how it starts.

And then there is the pesky question of science.

?I would very clearly disagree with the concept that there is research to support (no contact before age 14),? said Dr. Jeffrey Kutcher, chair of the Sports Neurology Section of the American Academy of Neurology.

?I don?t feel like we need to have all the science lined up before we make policy decisions, but those decisions should be made based on common sense and science rather than randomness.?

Yet even Kutcher has difficulty dismissing the idea outright. The reality, he says, is that brains don?t like to be hit a lot and younger brains are still developing, which could cause problems down the road.

Kutcher says he advocates ?diminishing versus outlawing? head contact, adding that waiting to tackle until age 14 sounds arbitrary.

?Some of the sports we?ve introduced children to involve hundreds of hits to the head,? said Chris Nowinski, a concussion expert and author of ?Head Games.?

?Show me the scientific evidence that that?s a good idea.?

What everyone seems to agree about is that hits to the developing brain are bad; that agreement can dissolve once the emotionally charged conversation about the sanctity of sport begins.

?I would love to debate anyone, anytime, anywhere about this,? said Cantu. ?What the other side will say is you have to teach the kids the skills of a sport at a very young age otherwise they?re at a competitive disadvantage. It?s just plain B.S.?

?I?m pro-sports. I just want them to be played more safely,? said Cantu, adding that youth athletes have the least-experienced coaches and few medical personnel on the sidelines, putting them at a compelling disadvantage.

What he wants is for parents to carefully consider the potential long-term consequences of brain blows in their children ? to advocate for their safety.

?Reform should be happening much faster at the youth level than it does,? said Nowinski, who is co-founder of the Sports Legacy Institute with Cantu. ?We?re saying wake up, your child has so many disadvantages.

?Your kids only have one life and you should think twice about putting your kid in a sport where they?re hitting their head repeatedly.?

As for the magic number 14? Cantu says that age matters less than maturity and that parents might even decide to wait until after age 14 to expose their children to contact.

?The mantra of the book is that no head trauma is good head trauma,? said Cantu. The brain cannot be conditioned to take head trauma so make it as little as possible.?

Questions lingers about long-term impact of subtle hits to the head.

Grieving Pet Owners Want Imported Dog Treats Pulled From Shelves

Rita Desollar believes chicken jerky treats imported from China killed her German shepherd, Heidi. Rita Desollar

Rita Desollar believes chicken jerky treats imported from China killed her German shepherd, Heidi.

The Food and Drug Administration isn't sure, but Rita Desollar of Pekin, Ill., feels she knows what killed Heidi, her 7-year-old German shepherd. She feels it was the chicken jerky strips she bought at her local Walgreen's.

Desollar says on the Wednesday before Memorial Day, she gave two pieces of Waggin' Train jerky to Heidi as a treat. A few days later, Heidi was throwing up and "in a lot of distress," she says. By the time the holiday rolled around on Monday, Desollar says, Heidi was convulsing in her bed. She died that day, before Desollar could even take her to the vet.

"I didn't know what happened or why," she tells The Salt. "I got on the Internet and I typed into Google 'What killed my dog?' What came up took my breath away."

?

Desollar found dozens of posts on various websites from people who claim their dogs got sick from eating the same types of chicken jerky treats - all of them imported from China. She also discovered that the FDA was conducting an active investigation into these treats, but the agency has not found any direct evidence that the treats are causing a problem, so it has not issued any warnings.

There haven't been warnings because the FDA hasn't officially concluded that there's anything wrong with these imported pet treats. Though it has received more than 2,000 complaints about them in the past five years, the FDA's tests haven't turned up any contaminant or adulterant in the treats that would give it a reason to issue a mandatory recall.

The FDA didn't respond to our inquiries, but an FDA official recently told a conference of veterinarians that concerns about the treats might be overblown.

"Two thousand complaints since 2007 is an incredibly small subset of the 15 million animals estimated to consume these treats," Dr. Tracy DuVernoy, with the FDA's Coordinated Outbreak Response and Evaluation Network, said last month.

DuVernoy didn't rule out a contamination. But she told the veterinarians that, if there is something wrong with the dog treats, it's something the FDA's scientists haven't been able to pin down. "Since a lot has been ruled out," she said, "it might be a very intricate sort of biological response."

DuVernoy was quoted in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medicine Association's web coverage of the conference.

We reached out to the Waggin' Train company, but they haven't responded to us yet. We will update this post if and when they do.

While the FDA waits and conducts more testing, Desollar doesn't want retailers to wait. A few weeks ago, she created an online petition demanding that Walgreen's, Walmart, Kroger and other retailers yank the treats off their shelves. Within less than a month, the petition has garnered more than 60,000 signatures.

We contacted several of the retailers on Desollar's list. They said they're waiting to take action until the FDA comes to an official conclusion about whether the pet treats are safe or not.

But Desollar says, at the very least, the stores should give their customers full information about what's already happened.

"Just tell me it's under FDA investigation," she says. "I'll make the decision."

Dresses that hid Frida Kahlo's pain come to light decades on

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The colorful dresses of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo will go on display for the first time in November after being kept hidden from public view for 50 years at the request of her husband, acclaimed muralist Diego Rivera.

Curators of the Kahlo's "Blue House" in Mexico City discovered a trove of 300 dresses, bathing suits, accessories and photographs in 2004 and are now ready to show the public 22 items from the unique wardrobe that turned her into a fashion muse.

The exhibit explores Kahlo's fascination with Mexico's indigenous women and her penchant for richly embroidered ethnic frocks, flowery headpieces and ornate silver jewelry that earned her a photo shoot with Vogue magazine in 1937.

It also reveals how she chose clothes to hide her disfigurement after a bout of childhood polio that left one leg thinner than the other and a devastating bus accident that broke her spine in three places and left her in constant pain and scarred from subsequent surgeries.

"We must remember that Frida - like Diego - wanted the colors, the dress, the culture of Mexican women to be public and known," said Carlos Phillips, head of the museums that exhibit Kahlo and Rivera's work.

"They were attempting to rescue a people which had been abandoned. Mexican society dressed like Europeans. Those types of clothes weren't appreciated as much anymore," he said.

Kahlo and Rivera are two of Mexico's most celebrated figures, and their on-off stormy marriage was among the most prominent of the 20th century art world.

Kahlo, who died from pneumonia in 1954 at age 47, led a troubled life fraught with illness and tumultuous love affairs. A member of the Mexican Communist Party, she was a fierce supporter of the country's traditional culture.

"Frida Kahlo without a doubt is a very important icon in the fashion scene," said Kelly Talamas, editor of Vogue magazine for Mexico and Latin America.

"She had more of a dark side, and also had her side in which she was inspired by the colors and the textures and the people and the culture here in Mexico," she said. "I think that's what's most inspiring to designers, that the pieces that she wore create a story."

Vogue has commissioned contemporary Frida-inspired pieces from several designers to display alongside the originals.

PAIN AND DISFIGUREMENT

Kahlo began painting as a teenager while convalescing from the crash in 1925 and her work and the numerous self-portraits for which she is best known reflect the searing pain she lived with until her death.

The museum had respected Rivera's request to keep Frida's clothing under lock and key for half a century after she died in 1954. Rivera had wanted to preserve the items and protect them from people who might not take care of them properly.

When they did start examining the items, they were thrilled to find the exact outfit worn in the 1937 Vogue shoot.

Seen by Reuters, it features a European-inspired green, ruffled blouse with high neck and long sleeves, with small buttons down the back, and a voluminous, ivory-colored silk taffeta skirt with a floral print and lace hem. A magenta shawl wrapped around the shoulders completed the look. The blouse now has some stains from Kahlo's oil paints.

"She didn't just choose any dress. This particular dress ... symbolizes a strong woman," said Circe Henestrosa, the exhibit's curator.

"It's also a dress that projected her political beliefs and her desire to promote her Mexican identity. As far as her disability, it's a dress that allowed her to hide her physical imperfections," she said.

4 Post-Divorce Checkpoints: Are You Ready To Date? | Catholic ...

?

Rebuilding your life after divorce can be quite challenging. For many people, it involves not just adjusting to the change emotionally, but moving to a new area, finding an entirely different set of friends, finding a new parish, etc.

If you?re reading this, you are likely a member of CatholicMatch and on your way to finding like-minded people who share your experiences and are looking for friendships and romance.

?

But are you ready for romance? Beyond the obvious question of ?do you have a decree of nullity?? which means you are free to date, there are some important checkpoints that can help you determine your state of readiness for another relationship:

?

1. Are you working too much in order to avoid being alone? Do you feel that being busy is better than being alone? If so, this is an area you will want to work on before you date. Why? Because if you?re not comfortable being alone and able to enjoy your own company, you might get into a relationship for the wrong reasons. You might not be able to get out of a relationship that doesn?t work because you dislike being alone.

?

Resolution: Plan a day out by yourself. Block off a specific amount of time and have a specific place to go. Splurge if you can and even if you can?t because funds are tight, make sure you go somewhere you can enjoy. If admission to a museum is too much, why not browse the art at the local street festival? Whatever you do, remember the goal is to get comfortable in your own skin and enjoy being you with or without a significant other. This is something you can do multiple times.

?

2. Have you worked to overcome your faulty behavior that contributed to your divorce or are you still blaming your ex for everything? If you?ve gone through the annulment process, it?s highly likely that you?ve got this one tackled. The annulment process digs deeply and reveals all kinds of truths about your divorce, your spouse, and yourself. But if you acknowledge you need some help in this area, you should address it thoroughly before you date.

?

Resolution: Take a personal inventory. If you search the internet, you will undoubtedly find various personal inventories you can take and these will be helpful. But you need to address the specific issues that contributed to your divorce. Write down the things you know about yourself that were problematic in your marriage and directly across from those, write an action that will help you change that behavior. Look at it every day and make these actions daily habits.

?

5. Are you confident in the good things you can bring to a new relationship or are you feeling doubts about your self-worth? If you want to be in love, but aren?t confident in your own gifts, talents and strengths then you need to take a different kind of personal inventory. Remind yourself of your many good points.

?

Resolution: Take some time to reflect on your life from childhood to today and make note of all the good things about you. Your list should be more than 3 or 4 entries long and if it?s not, you are being too hard on yourself; another detriment to having a successful relationship.

?

4. Do memories of your marriage and ex-spouse hurt briefly and then life goes on or are you still having ?bad days?? It?s important to acknowledge that if you are divorced, there will always be painful reminders of the past. You are not alone in that but how those painful reminders affect you is up to you.

?

Resolution: If you hear a song, find an article of clothing or experience something else that stirs the pain all over again, the best thing you can do is let it come and then let it go. Don?t stuff it down inside and put a lid on it. Don?t ignore it or try to avoid it. Acknowledge it for what it is and then let it pass. Then, say a brief prayer of thanks for your blessings. This is how you can turn bad days into bad moments that don?t last very long.

?

My prayer for you is that you will find a loving, permanent relationship with someone. Having been divorced, annulled and remarried myself, I offer these suggestions to you in hopes you will prepare yourself for an incredible future. As always, you can reach me at asklisa@catholicmatch.com.

Doctors don't always address high blood pressure

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Doctors sometimes miss the opportunity to better control their patients' high blood pressure, according to a new study.

Researchers found that of 7,153 people with uncontrolled high blood pressure participating in a U.S. survey, only about 20 percent were prescribed new medications during doctors' visits.

High blood pressure is a reading of 140/90 and above.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure has been linked to - among other things - heart attacks, strokes and aneurysms.

"It's a missed opportunity, and we're not trying to blame the doctor," said Dr. Raman Ravi Khanna, the study's lead author from the University of California, San Francisco.

"We want to grab those moments when we can."

National guidelines recommend people with high blood pressure be prescribed medication and those already on medication get a new one if their condition worsens.

For the new study, Khanna and his colleagues wanted to see whether doctors were following those recommendations. They also wanted to know which factors influenced doctors' prescribing decisions.

The researchers reviewed data on 16,473 doctors' visits recorded in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey between 2005 and 2009 for patients already diagnosed with high blood pressure.

Some of them may have been on blood pressure medicine and others were likely told to bring their blood pressure under control by other means, including lifestyle changes, Khanna explained.

Whether they were on medication or not, more than 7,000 of those patients still had blood pressure that was too high. But only about 20 percent of their doctors' visits ended with patients being prescribed a new blood pressure medicine.

People with very high blood pressure and those who specifically came to the doctor for the condition were more likely to get a new prescription. Meanwhile, those already on blood pressure medicine were less likely get a new one.

The researchers pointed out in the Archives of Internal Medicine that they couldn't tell whether doctors increased the dose of their patients' current blood pressure medicine instead of prescribing a new one, however.

Across the U.S. about one in three adults has high blood pressure, according to the National Institutes of Health - and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 36 million Americans' conditions are uncontrolled.

Khanna told Reuters Health it's important that patients remind doctors about their blood pressure.

"If you have uncontrolled blood pressure, you should always bring it up to your doctor, because it's one of the most common problems we deal with. In fact, it's so common that we often forget about it," he said.

Military leaders: We're still too fat to fight ? The Chart - CNN.com Blogs

Childhood obesity isn't just a health issue, according to a group of retired military leaders. It's also a national security issue.

One in four young adults are too overweight to join the U.S. military, a new report from the advocacy group Mission: Readiness says. And the U.S. Department of Defense spends an estimated $1 billion each year on medical care related to obesity issues for active duty members, their dependents and veterans.

"No other major country's military forces face the challenges of weight gain confronting America's armed forces," according to the report.

"At the end of the day, the reason America is safe and sound is not because of its tanks," adds retired Lt. Gen. Norman Seip, spokesman for Mission: Readiness. "It?s really the men and women who volunteer and so proudly serve."

Kids on average consume 130 "empty" calories a day from candy, cookies and chips, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Mission: Readiness has been working to get rid of junk food in schools since 2010, when it supported the passing of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. The act requires the USDA to update nutrition standards in schools.

Mission: Readiness believes having healthier food in the cafeteria and in vending machines will help slow - or even reverse - rising childhood obesity rates. And healthy children are more likely to grow up to be healthy adults who can serve their country.

"We?re not picking on the schools," Seip says. "The schools are part of the solution. We like to think that this obesity problem... is one that?s going to require all of America to tackle."

California Governor Brown signs bill clearing use of driverless cars on public roads (video)

California Governor Brown signs bill clearing use of driverless cars on public roads video

Google just chalked up one of the more important victories for driverless cars. California Governor Jerry Brown has signed bill SB1298 into law, formalizing the legal permissions and safety standards needed to let automated vehicles cruise on state-owned roads. While the bill lets anyone move forward with their plans, it's clear from the ceremony that local technology darling Google is the primary impetus for the measure: Brown visited Google's Mountain View headquarters to put ink to paper, and Google co-founder Sergey Brin oversaw the signing with his Google Glass eyewear on full display. If you're dying to see driverless vehicles become mainstays of the Golden State, the official act making that possible is already available to watch after the break.

Paralympics: Israeli pilot overcomes crash to win tennis gold

Noam Gershony won gold for Israel yesterday in wheelchair tennis at the London Paralympics.?

By Christa Case Bryant,?Staff writer / September 9, 2012

It's too bad more people don't tune into the Paralympics, because they offer really outstanding examples of human triumph ? maybe more so than the heavily commercialized Olympic Games.

Take Noam Gershony, who won gold for Israel yesterday in wheelchair tennis at the London Paralympics. Mr. Gershony, an Apache helicopter pilot, was injured and his co-pilot killed when their craft collided with another helicopter during Israel's 2006 war with Lebanon. After extensive rehabilitation, he took up surfing and wheelchair tennis.

The persistence he displayed in overcoming that ordeal no doubt came in handy during the Paralympic semifinals when he found himself losing to local favorite Jamie Burdekin of Great Britain. As in life, so on the court: He rallied back after the first set to defeat Burdekin ? advancing to the finals, where he bested the top-ranked player in the world, David Wagner of the US.

Gershony says he never expected to win gold at the 2012 Paralympics in London, and his modest, almost bashful smile upon wheeling up to the top of the podium said as much. Only one Israeli has ever won gold at the Olympic Games, windsurfer Gal Fridman in 2004. Gershony's gold, though captured on the less-heralded stage of the Paralympics, was much celebrated in the Israeli media this weekend.?

Badminton: Lee beats Boonsak, wins Japan Open title

Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia signs autographs for Japanese fans after his winning match against Simon Santoso of Indonesia at the men?s singles semi-finals of the Japan Open badminton tournament in Tokyo on September 22, 2012. AFP FILE PHOTO

TOKYO ? Two-time champion Lee Chong Wei regained the men?s singles title by fending off the challenge from Boonsak Ponsana to win the Japan Open badminton tournament on Sunday.

The Malaysian top seed, the winner in Japan in 2007 and 2010, powered his way through to a 21-18, 21-18 victory over the Thai.

?It was really a good match, but it was tough,? said Lee, 29.

?This is my first tournament after the London Olympics. I?m very happy to start with this victory. I can put my disappointment behind me with this title,? said Lee, who lost to Lin Dan in the Olympic finals twice in a row.

Lee hit a smash to take the first game, and then neither could take a decisive lead in the second game to be tied at 5-5.

Lee jumped ahead 10-6 showing several disguised overhead drop shots combined with a smash and then took a commanding 20-15 lead.

Boonsak tenaciously saved three match points to trail 18-20, but his jump smash went wide after a long rally on the next point to surrender the 42-minute match.

Lee improved his record against Boonsak to 14 wins against two defeats.

Mechanical Donkey Kong game tests your barrel-jumping skills, patience

Mechanical Donkey Kong game

We've seen quite a few NES mods in our day, but we can't say we've ever seen one hooked up to anything quite like this. Built by DIY-er Martin Raynsford, this contraption / work-of-art makes use of an Arduino (naturally) to relay signals from the NES controller to the Donkey Kong screen brought to life above, which was constructed with near pixel-perfect accuracy out of laser-cut parts. As Raynsford points out, though, things are still a bit limited in the game's V1 state. There isn't much of an actual "game," for starters -- just Mario stuck in the middle with a never-ending loop of barrels / ball bearings that you can jump over. A second version is planned with a greater degree of control, but we're guessing the video for it won't be quite as hypnotic as the one after the break.

Some good replacements for Apple's Maps app

4 hrs.

Question:?I just upgraded to iOS 6 and I'm liking most of the new features. However, the new Maps app is terrible. Is there a good replacement that won't send me driving all over the place??

Answer: You're right???Apple's new Maps app doesn't seem to work that well in a lot of places. Everyone's results are going to vary, of course, but if you're looking for alternatives with a little more pedigree you have some great options. It really depends on what you use Maps for, and how much you're willing to spend. So, let's break it down a bit by the type of Maps user you are.

Get all the features of Apple's Maps (but better)

While the turn-by-turn navigation in Maps works really well, the maps themselves aren't that great. If you just want a simple voice navigated maps app that works properly, we really likeWaze because it's free, does traffic updates, has a great location search, and plenty more (pictured on the right).

Waze doesn't feature the lovely maps used in Apple's version, nor does it have the (not particularly useful) 3D views, but as far as navigation is concerned, it works really well. The bonus is that location search also works a lot better and offers more results than Maps. If you don't mind paying for an app, Navigon does a great job of navigation, has integrated Google business search, and just added public transit guides. It's currently on sale for $39.99.

Get transit directions and public transportation schedules

If you rely on public transportation for getting around town, Maps isn't going to do you any good. When you tap on the bus symbol in Maps, you're taken to a screen where you can download new apps. Even when you have one of the suggested apps installed, Maps kicks you out and sends you to another app for your directions.

Solutions for public transit woes vary depending on where you're located because there isn't a catch-all, great public transportation app that covers the entire country. The good news is that Maps is (kind of) smart enough to suggest apps in the location you're in.?

If you don't want to futz about with all that, here's a few we've tried that work well:

  • Lumatic City Maps: Lumatic City Maps supports 27 major major U. S.?cities, and offers public transit and walking directions. It also directly integrates data from Yelp, Foursquare, Facebook, and more into your local business searches, provides traditional maps, and is very easy to follow. If you only take public transportation (and live in one of the 27 cities), Lumatic City Maps works great.
  • Hopstop: If you live in one of the cities that Hopstop supports, then the Hopstop app is one of the cleanest, easiest to use transit navigation apps out there. It doesn't have a ton of features, but the schedules seem to be up-to-date, and the directions are easy to follow. Hopstop isn't integrated into Maps yet, but it works fine without it.
  • Navigon: As mentioned above, Garmin's Navigon app also just added public transportation. If you mix up whether you drive or take public transportation, the $39.99 might not be a bad deal.
  • Transit???Public Transit Trip Planner: If you know your way around the city and don't want to deal with directions, just routes, then we really like CG Transit. It doesn't have fancy features ??just timetables and directions.

Again, as we mentioned, transit apps aren't exactly universal. If you don't live in a major metropolitan city, you'll have to dig a little further to see if your local transportation system has an app of its own. You should also try at least both Lumatic and Hopstop for yourself since they're free, and we couldn't test them in every city they support to see what works best.

Get Google Maps back???sort of

Of course, what many people really want is good old Google Maps back. It wasn't without its faults, but the fact it integrates driving directions, up-to-date maps, transit directions, biking and walking directions, and a robust business search, it's very much missed. Chances are Google will release their own version of the Maps app soon, but for now you can at least use the web version pretty easily.

  1. Open up Safari on your iPhone and head to https://maps.google.com/.
  2. Tap the export button in the bottom menu bar.
  3. Tap "Add to Home Screen.
  4. Name the icon, and tap "Add."

Now you get a direct home screen shortcut to the mobile version of Google Maps. It's not as good as a real app, but it does provide all the features of the original iPhone app in one easy place.

Make Apple Maps better

If you actually enjoy Apple's Maps app (it is nice to look at after all), you can contribute to making it better. You can do this in one of two ways. First off, you can report problems with mislabeled streets, satellite images, directions, or other problems:

  1. From the Maps home screen, tap the curled page on the bottom right side.
  2. Tap "Report a Problem" (right above the large "Print" button).
  3. Select Your problem, add any comments, and send it off.

The other problem with Maps is the fact it gathers most of its business data from Yelp, and that means it's missing a lot of locations. You can add locations in the process mentioned above (in the Report a Problem screen, tap "Location is Missing" and drag the purple pin to the address you want), or add locations directly in Yelp so they show up. Whether you're a small business owner, or you just want to make sure your favorite restaurant is in Apple Maps, adding it to Yelp will eventually get it into Maps.

That should do it. For a lot of people, Apple's move to its own mapping system has caused some serious problems, and the lack of transit directions is a big bummer even if you only use public transportation on rare occasions. The above methods will get you rolling in style again, and should keep you from making too many bad turns.

White Chocolate Brownies & A Giveaway - The Nifty Foodie

White Chocolate Brownies

I love living in the South. Sure, the heat index is enough to make you want to just sit in an ice bath all day, but the food?! Oh, the food MORE than makes up for it.

Around here?.

?your cooking is judged based on how good your gumbo is
?we embrace stale bread for bread pudding
?we have a love (the drink)/hate (the storm) relationship with hurricanes
?we don?t mind getting our hands dirty to dig out tiny pieces of seafood over newspaper
?a biggie?you know the difference between creole and cajun food

I know a lot of people frown upon Louisiana since there are some stigmas about living here, but I really am blessed to say that this is my home. I just love the little things that make Louisiana home, and even if I don?t live here the rest of my life, I know that Louisiana will always be a part of me. Cheesy, but seriously true.

When I was contacted about reviewing a cookbook called ?The Southern Foodie?, I just couldn?t resist. The book, written by food/drink/travel writer Chris Chamberlain, features recipes from favorite restaurants in the South and it?s organized by state. Of course, when I got the cookbook, I frantically flipped through the pages and bookmarked numerous recipes.

I was very happy to see Louisiana well-represented in the book, too. There are some great staples in there, like red beans and rice, pralines and bread pudding, to name a few. Besides the classics, I found that there are some fun, out of the box recipes, like barbequed oysters and sweet potato-andouille soup. This book is great for someone trying to get a feel for Southern food, and even for Southerners, it?s impressive how many different recipes the author has in here that I?ve never heard of.

One of the hardest things for me when I find a good cookbook is to choose a first recipe. I actually have quite a few that I want to try, but I was really in the mood to bake, so I decided to make these white chocolate brownies. I love that brownies bake up so quickly and you don?t have to fork out the mixer to make them. It?s sort of dangerous how easy brownies are to throw together and these were no exception. :-) This brownie is a white chocolate brownie base with white and bittersweet chocolate mixed in. Often times, I find white chocolate desserts to be a little too sweet, but I really think the bittersweet chocolate helped to balance things out a good bit. I ended up halving the recipe, since the original recipe makes two 13?9 inch pans worth of brownies (the halved recipe is below). I sent these to work with my husband, and found out that some people enjoyed 2-3 brownies on their own, so this recipe is definitely a winner. Based on this recipe, I can?t wait to give some others a try!

Now, you know I wouldn?t just dangle this cookbook in front of y?all without having a giveaway. :-) The publisher sent me extra books to giveaway to two lucky readers!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 sticks of unsalted butter, cut into 4 tbsp. pieces
  • 6 oz. finely chopped white chocolate
  • 3 large eggs
  • pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 oz. coarsely chopped white chocolate
  • 4 oz. coarsely chopped bittersweet chocolate

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 13?9 inch baking pan.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter on low heat. Once the butter is melted, add the finely chopped white chocolate and stir until the chocolate is melted. Remove the pan from heat, and allow it to cool.
  3. While the chocolate is cooling, add the eggs and salt to a large bowl and whisk well, until the eggs are light and frothy. Slowly add the sugar and butter/chocolate mixture while mixing, and then add the vanilla extract and flour. Mix the batter until everything is smooth and well-combined. Add the coarsely chopped white and bittersweet chocolate and mix them in well.
  4. Pour the batter into your greased pan, and bake for 25-30 minutes, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Cut the brownies and enjoy!

Aung San Suu Kyi visits Washington

Worrying about military rule doesn't keep Myanmar's democracy leader Aung?San?Suu?Kyi?up at night, but just a little bit of noise does.

Suu?Kyi?offered a rare glimpse into her personal side Thursday when she took questions and offered advice to young human rights activists in Washington.

One activist asked what challenges and problems keep the 67-year-old Nobel peace laureate up at night.

Suu?Kyi?confided that's she's a very light sleeper. She said every little noise disturbs her, but serious issues ? of which the former prisoner has encountered many during two decades of political upheaval in Myanmar ? usually don't.

She said she's learned that, in time, even what looks like the most horrible event in your life will appear less serious.

Suu?Kyi?was speaking to a gathering organized by Amnesty International USA a day after receiving Congress' highest honor for her peaceful struggle for democracy, the ceremonial highlight of a landmark trip across America.

Suu?Kyi?spent 15 years under house arrest in the country also known as Burma, separated from her family, and unable to see her husband, British academic Michael Aris, before his death from cancer in 1999.?Suu?Kyiwas released in late 2010 and has since joined hands with members of the former ruling junta that detained her to push ahead with political reform.

"I honestly never despaired although there were times when I was very very worried about our people outside," she said, referring to supporters of her political party that won 1990 elections but was barred from power. "Because house arrest is a lot easier than in prison."

She said she loved reading and that enabled her to feel as free as anyone else.

"Through my books I could get to wherever I wished to," she said.

Despite the cruelties committed during 50 years of military rule ? including bloody crackdowns on protesters and wars on ethnic minorities ??Suu?Kyi?said she always retained a deep affection for Myanmar's army, because her father, independence hero?Aung?San, was its founder.

"Although they kept me under house arrest they treated me well. Most of them treated me as my father's daughter," she said. "That is they treated me as a member of the family, albeit a rather troublesome one."

She urged the several hundred young activists assembled in front of her not just to campaign for the release of political prisoners but to try to change the mindset of the jailers, by disabusing them of the emotion that motivates them: their own fear.

Suu?Kyi?goes next to New York, where 40 years ago, she worked for the United Nations. She'll then travel to Kentucky, Indiana and California to speak on campuses and meet Burmese expatriates.

Endeavour stops in Houston en route to California

HOUSTON (AP) ? The space shuttle Endeavour is scheduled to leave Houston early Thursday after giving locals a brief glimpse of what might have been.

Hundreds lined the streets and crowded the airport Wednesday to see the retired shuttle land before it was to head to California where it will be permanently displayed, a fact that doesn't sit well with many Houston residents who feel Space City was cheated out of an artifact that should have been theirs to keep.

"I think that it's the worst thing that they can do, rotten all the way," said 84-year-old Mary Weiss, clinging to her walker just before Endeavour landed after flying low over Gulf Coast towns, New Orleans and then downtown Houston and its airports.

Space City, partly made famous by Tom Hanks when he uttered the line "Houston, we have a problem" in the movie "Apollo 13," has long tied its fortune to a mix of oil and NASA. Astronauts train in the humid, mosquito-ridden city, and many call it home years after they retire. The Johnson Space Center and an adjacent museum hug Galveston Bay.

Houston's bid for a shuttle was rejected after the White House retired the fleet last summer to spend more time and money on reaching destinations, such as Mars and asteroids. Instead, Houston got a replica that used to be displayed at the Kennedy Space Center.

"The one we're getting is a toy. An important toy, but a toy nonetheless," said Scott Rush, 54, of Crystal Beach, Texas.

Still, people came out in droves Wednesday, waving American flags and toting space shuttle toys, cameras and cellphones.

Back-to-back delays in the ferry flight resulted in one day being cut from the Houston visit. After landing, the Endeavour rolled slowly in front of the cheering crowd. It circled and preened like a runway model, giving awed spectators an opportunity to take pictures from a variety of angles.

"I want to go on it," said 3-year-old Joshua Lee as he headed to the landing area with his mother and grandmother.

Joshua's mother, Jacqueline Lee of Houston, viewed the landing as an educational opportunity.

"I don't know if he'll get to see this again," Lee said.

Around sunrise Thursday, the shuttle was scheduled to leave Houston, riding piggyback on a jumbo jet. It's booked to stop at Biggs Army Airfield in El Paso, Texas, before heading to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Calif. After spending a night there, the shuttle will head to Los Angeles International Airport on Friday.

In mid-October, Endeavour will be transported down city streets to the California Science Center, its permanent home.

NASA still plays a large role in Houston, and astronaut Clayton Anderson, who lived on the International Space Station from June to November 2007, encouraged people to focus on a new era of space exploration.

"The shuttles are a wonderful legacy, a huge part of Houston, but now it's time to look to the future," said Anderson, who lives in the Houston suburb of League City.

This is the last flight for a space shuttle. Atlantis will remain at Kennedy for display, and Discovery is already at the Smithsonian Institution, parked at a hangar in Virginia since April.

Endeavour ? the replacement for the destroyed Challenger shuttle ? made its debut in 1992 and flew 25 times before it was retired. It logged 123 million miles in space and circled Earth nearly 4,700 times.
