Michael B. Fishbein: Startup Advice from David S. Kidder

David S. Kidder is a serial entrepreneur and angel investor. Currently, he's the co-founder and CEO of Bionic, an enterprise innovation platform. Prior to Bionic, David served as the co-founder and CEO of Clickable (acquired by Syncapse). Prior to Clickable, Kidder co-founded SmartRay Network (acquired by LifeMinders), and Net-X (acquired by Target Vision). In January 2013, he published The Startup Playbook, which leverages his insider access to reveal the experiences and advice of over 40 of the world's leading entrepreneurs.

When I interviewed David last week, he shared some amazing advice on starting a company, hiring, and more. I've summarized my key takeaways from our conversation below.

Starting a Company

  • When starting a company, trust your innate gifts. Mold the company around these gifts so you're working towards something that's at your highest level of interest and purpose.
  • Entrepreneurship is a career, not an outcome. It takes a long time to become good at it.
  • In The Startup Playbook, David asked the entrepreneurs what percentage of their economic outcome they attribute to good fortune, timing, or simply luck - across the board, all answered that 70% of their success was due to luck. Luck is the intersection of hard work and good fortune. An incredible amount of things need to go right (or not go wrong) at exactly the right time for you to succeed.
  • Being a successful entrepreneur is a hero's journey. The uncertainty and possibility leads to incredible learning and growth for you as a person -- it's about who you are capable of becoming, not who you are. The fact that there is no safety net at all forces maturity on you.

Silicon Alley vs. Silicon Valley

  • Silicon Valley is 20 years ahead of New York City's Silicon Alley in terms of network, capital, acquisitions, etc. This is because it takes a long time for communities to evolve. You need institutions, large acquiring companies, and a strong network of talent. New York has been steadily improving in these areas; there are now significant investment cohorts coming through NYC.
  • However, Silicon Valley also has a downside: it's an echo chamber. Everyone has similar experiences and influences, which can lead to groupthink. New York City has more cultural diversity and a more open community than Silicon Valley, which is more insular.
  • In the Valley, larger established companies will acquire startups just to gain competitive technical advances, or because the smaller company's technology or intellectual property is appealing. Business in New York City is much more finance-driven.

Productivity

  • If you need sleep, you shouldn't start a company. You have to be able to work more hours and juggle more things than the average individual. This requires exceptional productivity skills.
  • Delegating is key. Quit areas of weakness and commitments that don't drive growth. Don't do something just because you can do it well; go with what's going to add the most value to your product or service.

Enterprise Sales

  • Relationships are key when selling into the Enterprise marketplace. If you have a relationship with a C-level executive, it can take days for a deal to happen. But if you're going in at the VP level, it can take a year or more. Selling effectively requires more than just a great product. You need great reputational signaling and great relationships.

Corporate Innovation

  • Not for a lack of desire or talent, large companies haven't been able to grow at a startup's pace. They've been in the efficiency game too long, acting as administrators of what they have instead of creators of something new. They're accustomed to seeking growth through mergers and acquisitions, as opposed to new ventures.
  • Startups have a high failure rate, and that's generally not acceptable in the world of enterprise. But in today's rapidly changing economy, more big businesses are finding that they need to foster a culture similar to that of a startup.

Hiring

  • Be extremely careful about selecting and curating your team. Making a mistake in this area is one of the only things that can be fatal, as one wrong hire in the beginning can screw up an entire company.

David's favorite interview questions for potential hires:

1. "Tell me something I don't know about my business." By their answers, you can tell if people have done their homework or not.
2. "On a scale from 1 - 10, how fortunate are you and why?" With this question, you can get a better picture of the individual by learning about his or her whole life. You can also get answers to questions that you're not legally allowed to ask.
3. "What did people most misunderstand about you at your last job?" While a candidate will often tell you why their former teammates didn't like them, the way they explain themselves can reveal much about how they would fit into your team, and the company's overall culture.

The Tyranny of the Smile

Women smiling. Women smiling

Photos courtesy of Thinkstock

Back in April the comedy website Funny or Die created a PSA video about a dire condition afflicting a subset of women: Bitchy Resting Face. ?That?s just my face? is the?cri de coeur?of the BRF sufferer, who looks pissed even when she?s not judging your outfit or dreaming up schemes against unsuspecting colleagues. ?We?ll face it together,? the commercial promises BRFers worldwide. Scan the actors? visages and that invitation seems less than reassuring.

The video, of course, is a joke. And it is evenhanded enough to describe an equivalent male syndrome, Asshole Resting Face, occurring in certain well-intentioned men. Still, the gag recalls the commotion over a Publishers Weekly story in which an interviewer asked author Claire Messud whether she?d want to befriend her female antihero. ?For heaven?s sake, what kind of question is that,? Messud shot back. ?Would you want to be friends with Humbert Humbert? Would you want to be friends with Mickey Sabbath? Saleem Sinai? Hamlet? Krapp? Oedipus?? Messud was scorchingly indignant, and many felt she overreacted. But could she have been right to intuit something insidious in the question? We?do?inspect every last outward manifestation of a woman?s inner life?the characters she pens, the facial expressions she makes?for evidence of ?niceness.?

Women have to be nice. ?Show me a smile? is a staple of street harassment (the ur-creep of the genre being Heath Ledger?s Joker, a lank-haired greaseball leering, ?Why so serious??) And when they are not, when they are merely impassive or thoughtful, they can be held up for mockery and branded as rude.

To ask why is to step into the laser grid of unspoken rules governing the arrangement of male and female faces?the gendered ways we police social performance. (If you?re a woman who thinks this sort of policing doesn?t happen in real life, consider whether a friend has ever yanked you from an introspective haze by asking ?Are you mad at me?? She probably meant: Why aren?t you smiling?) We?ve tangled up so many notions of gender in our smiles that the presence or absence of a grin has come to imply a distinction between male and female. In one study, babies dressed in green and yellow were paraded before a group of onlookers. When the infants cooed, gurgled and smiled, the observers tagged them as girls; fretters and criers were assumed to be boys. The effect persisted when a different group of participants was presented with images of cheerful or angry adult faces. People readily identified smiling women as female and wrathful men as male, but they took longer and stumbled more often when confronted with furious female countenances or beaming male ones.

In a raft of studies, women report smiling more than men (and men report smiling less than women). They speak of grinning on the job, with strangers, with relatives, in a dazzlingly diverse array of situations. An unscientific scan of high school yearbook photos, newspaper clippings, Facebook pics, and advertisements backs up those studies: Women flash their pearly whites far more frequently than men, at least when someone is taking their picture. And in simulated job interviews, female participants salt their speech with smiles, while male test subjects are more likely to adopt neutral (read: alluringly strong and stoic) expressions.

Here?s the thing, though: All this feminine smiling does not mean that women are happier. Back in the 19th century, the French physiologist G.B.A. Duchenne distinguished the spontaneous facial sunrise now known as the Duchenne smile (the ?true? smile) from the imposters. While a performed or deliberate smile requires just the zygomaticus major, the muscle around the mouth, ?real? smiles involve both the lips and the muscles ringing the eyes, the orbicularis oculi. Or as Duchenne put it, one type of grin ?obeys the will, but the second is only put into play by the sweet emotions of the soul.? (Or as Tyra put it, ?smile with your eyes.?)

Apple?s Next Mac Pro To Be ?Really Different?

According to video professional Andrew Baird?s post on RedUser.net, the next Mac Pro will be??really different? when compared to the current-gen model. The fellow recently spoke with Mac Pro project manager Douglas Brooks about the machine ?a couple of months ago.? This conversation apparently took place after Baird emailed Apple CEO Tim Cook his issues with the current model of the Mac Pro.

Brooke told Baird the following:

You are going to be really glad that you waited [to buy a new tower]. We are doing something really different here and I think you?re going to be very excited when you see what we?ve been up to. I can?t wait to show this off.

So, what will this ?really different? Mac Pro offer? While no one is sure just yet, we?re almost certain that the desktop will offer updated SATA 3 connections and feature USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt IO out-of-the-box. Some have predicted that the computer will be heavily reliant on Thunderbolt and that internal expansion will be completely killed off. Though we doubt this, it would make for a ?really different? Mac Pro.

This isn?t the first we?ve heard of a new Mac Pro over the past year. After Apple slightly bumped the Mac Pro specs in mid-2012, Tim Cook told a disappointed Apple fan that a new Mac Pro will be released in 2013.

The Mac Pro is Apple?s highest-end desktop computer that features a traditional tower-style design. Internally, the computer can sport up to a 12-core Intel Xenon processor and offers user-accessible PCI slots for graphics cards and other devices. This makes the computer perfect for video professionals and other people who rely on raw power in their daily workflow.

Tiffany Aliche: Pay Off Debt in 7 Steps and Still Maintain Your Lifestyle

By show of hands, how many of you want to pay off debt? That many huh? No worries, so do I and so does just about everyone you know.

Unfortunately, debt is a way of life for many of us. I didn't want that to be my life, so I created a 7-step, pay off debt system that will have me debt free in a few years!

My pay off debt system is working so well for me, that I had to extend my financial help to you.

Ready? Set? Let's pay off debt...

Step 1) Create your Money List aka a quick budget. Before you can dig your way out of debt, you need to know where you currently stand financially. This process should take you no more than 30 minutes.

A Money List in 3 steps:
a. List EVERYTHING you spend money on (i.e. bills, entertainment, grooming, the kids...everything)
b. Write down how much each thing on your list costs you monthly. Unsure? Overestimate.
c. Add up your monthly spending and subtract it from your monthly, take-home pay.

Step 2) List all of your debt from lowest to highest.

FYI: You might need a box of tissues handy. Looking at your debt can be a bit depressing, but cheer-up chuck. You're only 5 steps away from getting your situation under control.

Step 3) Figure out how much money you can squeeze from your Money List, for your pay off debt plan. Good news! There's no need to change your lifestyle, unless your budget is wildly out of control (but that's another post). There are ways to free-up cash, without making dramatic changes to the way you live.

First, I suggest doing things like: reduce your cable (ask your provider to get rid of the channels you don't watch), cancel magazine subscriptions (ehm...the library), cancel a gym membership (come on, you're not using it), and call your service providers and ask for discounts (i.e.: car insurance, cell, utilities). This works! If they claim they can't help you, use the magic words, "Can you please transfer me to your Retention Department?". There's always a deal to be made.

Step 4) Pay only the minimum amount required on all of your debt, with the exception of the one debt you are trying to pay off. This should be the debt with the lowest amount owed. I suggest paying the lowest debt off first vs. the debt with the highest interest rate, because when you pay off debt quickly, having early success will trigger an emotional reaction from you (happy-dancing), and that will enable you to feel encouraged and will motivate you to continue with your pay off debt plan.

Step 5) Pay the minimum and the money you squeezed from your Money List (step 3) for debt reduction, toward the first (lowest) debt on your list. Make sure to automate the payments. This will leave you with less work and tallying to do each month. Remember to reset your automation when you move on to the next debt on your list.

Step 6) After paying off the first debt, apply ALL of the money you used each month to pay off debt #1 and put it towards the next debt on your list. This means that the minimum amount from the first debt, the minimum from the second and the extra money that you found in your Money List, will be applied toward the second debt on your list. Don't forget; automate this new payment; doing so will help you stick to your pay off debt plan. Haven't you heard? Automation is the new discipline.

Step 7) Pay off debt #2, then transfer ALL of the money you were paying each month to the second debt and apply it towards the third debt, along with its minimum. This means the third debt will be getting: the first debt's minimum, the second debt's minimum, its own minimum, plus the extra money you found in your Money List. Once again...AUTOMATE this new payment and continue with the cycle until you're debt free!

The AWESOME thing about this pay off debt plan is that, as you begin to pay off debt with higher balances, you'll have larger amounts of money to pay them. The reason is, you'll have "collected" all of the minimums from the previous lower debts, and will be using them along with the money found in your Money List to pay the higher debts off.

A little extra financial help: After using this pay off debt system, continue to make "payments" to yourself and finance your savings, retirement and investment goals. BOOM!

SIDEBAR: Give your pay off debt plan a Turbo Boost!

Use Unexpected Money (UM) to help pay off the main debt you're focused on. UM is any money received outside of your primary source of income, a.k.a. your J-O-B.

Examples of "Unexpected Money" are: a raise, loan repayment (to you), a refund (from taxes or from returning unwanted items), rebates (do you fill out and mail in those forms? I do!), found money, gifted money (happy birthday!). If you purchase an item that is on sale but don't realize it until you get to the cashier, the money you save is "Unexpected Money". You already planned to spend the money on the item, so you won't miss it if you use it for your debt reduction instead. If you have generous friends who occasionally surprise and treat you by paying for your meal, the money you were going to pay is also Unexpected Money. Cha-ching! Are you starting to see the possibilities here?

In a nutshell, "Unexpected Money" or UM, is any money that you did not expect to receive or save. It's money that does not normally contribute to your day-to-day living expenses. So, it's therefore not calculated into your Money List you now have. You do have a new Money List, right? (step 1)

The best way to use UM is immediately. As soon as you encounter UM, go online and make an additional bill payment in the amount of the UM, to the lowest debt you're working on. There is no amount too small and it really adds up!

Soooo, now that you've got your pay off debt plan in place, do you feel a little better?

Questions? Thoughts? Please share them nicely with me in the comments below.

AEG exec discusses Jackson interactions, emails

FILE - In this Sept. 28, 2011 file photo, concert promoter and producer on Michael Jackson's ill-fated "This Is It" tour, Paul Gongaware, testifies on the second day of Dr. Conrad Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial in the death of pop star Michael Jackson in downtown Los Angeles. Testimony from AEG Live executive Gongaware on his interactions with Jackson and his negotiations with the singer?s doctor dominated the fifth week of a civil case against the company filed by the superstar?s mother, Katherine. (AP Photo/Joel Ryan, File)

A look at key moments this past week in the wrongful death trial in Los Angeles between Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine Jackson, and concert giant AEG Live LLC, and what is expected at court in the week ahead:

THE CASE

Jackson's mother wants a jury to determine that the promoter of Jackson's planned comeback concerts didn't properly investigate Dr. Conrad Murray, who a criminal jury convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Jackson's June 2009 death. AEG's attorney says the case is about personal choice, namely Jackson's decision to have Murray serve as his doctor and give him doses of a powerful anesthetic as a sleep aid. Millions, possibly billions, of dollars are at stake.

? Several minutes of awkward questions lobbed at Gongaware over an email he sent to an assistant for one of his bosses ? "an absolute babe" as he described her ? in which he wrote that concert preparations were giving him nightmares and cold sweats. Gongaware insisted he was joking about the reactions.

WHAT HAPPENED THIS PAST WEEK

? Jurors heard from AEG Live executive Paul Gongaware, who reluctantly testified that he negotiated a deal with Murray to work with Jackson on the tour for $150,000 a month. He told the panel he didn't investigate the doctor's background, but consulted with a physician friend who told him that he would have gone on the tour for $10,000 a week.

? Gongaware described his interactions with the singer while preparing for "This Is It" and said he only saw Jackson impaired once, after a visit with his dermatologist.

WHAT THE JURY SAW

? Dozens of emails Gongaware sent or received during preparations for the "This Is It" tour, including several where Jackson's health was described as poor and declining.

QUOTABLE MOMENTS

? "Michael Jackson insisted on it and recommended him and it was not for me to tell him no," Gongaware said of discussions with Jackson about bringing Murray on the tour.

? "He was good. He was engaged, he was alert. He was paying attention. ... I watched him pretty carefully in the meetings we had," Gongaware said of Jackson in 2009 meetings.

OUTSIDE THE COURTROOM

? A plane flying a banner that reads, "Follow the $ to Michael Jackson's Death" made the rounds in the skies over Los Angeles, appearing downtown, at the beach on Memorial Day weekend and over the corporate offices of AEG Live.

WHAT'S NEXT

? AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips is expected to be on the witness stand much of the upcoming week after Gongaware is done answering questions posed by a defense attorney.
