Port Moody mayor to open youth arts festival on Friday

Dance, music, visual art and film will be featured by Tri-City teens this week at the second annual Port Moody Youth Arts Festival.

The two-day event ? held as part of the city?s centennial celebrations ? is being organized by the Port Moody Arts Centre society board members Hilary Letwin and Fitnat Fahrner, with the help of Susan Ius who was involved in the inaugural gala last year. Letwin said they tried to offer a varied program to attract a larger audience and ?I think it?s going to be a really good showcase in terms of the different groups out there in our community,? she said.

For the two dozen or so participants, aged 13 to 18, the festival will be a good platform to promote their talent, to make connections with their peers and to build their resumes. ?It?s really empowering for them,? Letwin said.

And for kids in the crowd, ?This is a good opportunity for them to see what teenagers are doing in the arts and in a professional setting. They can really learn from them.?

Working on a shoestring budget, the organizers have had help from the city, corporate sponsors ? including The Tri-City News ? and volunteers to get the event off the ground. There will be plenty of goodies handed out such as door prizes and iPads. As well, on Friday when Mayor Mike Clay opens the festivities, Rocky Point Ice Cream is donating $1 from the sale of each cone to the festival for its operations.

? The Port Moody Youth Arts Festival runs Friday and Saturday from 6 to 10 p.m. at Port Moody city hall. Admission is by donation.

Shen shares her passion for the arts

While Port Moody secondary student Lucy Shen will be on stage on Friday, she won?t have any song or dance routine to entertain the audience.

Instead, Shen will use her background as a public speaker to introduce the performers.

Being picked to emcee ?is really cool,? she said, ?because I really love the arts and I think that it?s important for young people to have an opportunity to display their talent in a public forum,? she said.

Besides the arts, the Grade 12 student is also passionate about social justice causes. In March, with her PMSS friends, she founded Dare to Dream, a club that promotes gender equality around the world.

In three months, it raised $400 for the Vancouver Women?s Shelter at a film festival.

And next year, she hopes to collect money for a local cause: the Tri-Cities? Transition Centre that helps women and children flee abuse.

Ska-funk is in their blood

Three years ago, while playing in their middle school concert band, drummer Eric Bates and bassist Mac Halvorsen founded ADOB.

They soon recruited Theoren Nesbitt for guitar and, a little while later, Francis Henson was brought in for vocals and guitar.

The band was just for fun until they clinched the top prize in a provincial-wide contest for youth bands last year.

?After that we thought, ?We should keep doing this,?? Henson said.

Since then, the Grade 11 students have been staple performers at their school ? Port Moody secondary ? and jamming every chance they can get.

?We like to perform. It?s one of our strengths as a band. We?re just four friends who like to play together,? Henson said.

The foursome write original ska-funk songs but also like to keep their sets current with covers.

They will open Saturday?s line-up with a 30-minute program, ?keeping it as lively and fun and entertaining as possible,? Henson said.

And he hopes the festival audience ?will find us on the internet and join our fan base. We also hope to talk to them afterwards and get to know us better.?

Four pieces on show

Shawna Lee was in Grade 4 when she first saw a gallery of children?s art by Tri-City art teacher Evelia Espinosa.

?I thought, ?Wow, if they can do it then so can I,?? said the 15-year-old Coquitlam resident.

Over the years, she plied her craft and is now being taught privately by painter Melanie Cossey as well as at her school, Archbishop Carney regional secondary in Port Coquitlam, under the direction of Linda Reis.

Lee primarily works with acrylics and oils and, for the Port Moody Youth Arts Festival, she will have four pieces on display in the city hall Galleria: an 18-by-24-inch oil reproduction of Hunter Bonyun?s Matter of Time; two acrylic works; and eight slides done pencil crayon, depicting the stages of strawberries being eaten.

Lee said she decided to apply to the festival after one of her friends played music at the event last year.

?I thought, ?Why not? I can do it, too. It?s a great way to get young artists known in the community and to showcase what I?ve been working on for the past couple of years,?? she said.

Student songbird

?Music has always been really important for me,? Julia Montgomery starts.

?It?s one of the biggest driving forces behind everything I do so whenever I get an opportunity to share it with the world, I want to jump on that because I think it?s really important.?

Now 15, Montgomery said she started vocal lessons when she was in Grade 6 ?after my parents finally wore down and let me take them,? she said with a laugh.

But while she has been studying musical theatre privately at the Lindbjerg Academy of Performing Arts in Coquitlam, under Elaine Lindbjerg, Montgomery has also been penning alternative tunes of her own.

Her 15-minute set on the Inlet Theatre stage on Friday night will be a combination of pop, musical theatre and her original songs.

Montgomery said she?s grateful for the festival committee for providing ?a deeper appreciation for the arts and all the talent that?s in Port Moody ? especially from the younger people.?

Cultural shakers

This will be Lia Fallah?s second time performing at the Port Moody Youth Arts Festival but the first time with a group.

Last year, the Gleneagle secondary student did a solo number that wowed the crowds. ?I enjoyed it so much,? the Grade 12 student said. ?Of course, I wanted to come back!?

For this year?s set, Fallah will be joined by her friends Gabrielle Stocker and Courtney Baines who will dance a wedding celebration to an Iranian groove.

Fallah, who portrays the bride, choreographed the number with her mother and stitched the costumes.

She is a little nervous that Anahita will close the festival on Saturday but is also excited at the opportunity.

As for their next steps, Anahita will learn Irish and Scottish jigs. ?We want to know the techniques and styles of all the cultural dances, all over the world,? Fallah said.

Significance Of Charter Private Jet Travel ? Information Catalog ...

For business executives and owners, there is a high possibility of using even the time of travel to the fullest. In special instances where someone may feel the need to travel in a relaxed and comfortable mode, then charter private jet is a good recommendation. Putting together the expenses that one may incur in commercial settings, including the lost time in trying to adhere to some of the airport procedures, this seems an efficient choice.

One popular objection to this way of travel by some companies is the definite high pricing associated with such types of flights. Comparing those hours spent travelling in this mode versus the numerous unproductive hours spent travelling commercially, a clear picture emerges. Thus, by chartering a jet, it allows executives accomplish even the most demanding business, with reduced wastage of time.

Holding business meetings en route to a destination is a possibility, considering that some trips normally require overnight stays. Thus, with the question of what the value of the time senior executives and business owners spend travelling is, an assessment of its true worth is key. It is in this manner that companies offering these services sells themselves.

Opposed to business aviation, some clients tend to fly for pleasure. In such instances, a vacation begins the minute someone boards a private jet and not after arrival at the destination. By flying in charter jets, one can travel at anytime, anywhere, with unmatched service and convenience.

The aspect of personal planning of events is a crucial feature in it all. This way, one gets to pick with whomever they feel like travelling. This also means that they get to choose the type of luxury services to enjoy including culinary combinations and ground transport immediately after touch down.

By actually using chartered jets, there is no obvious restriction to where to head with regard to airports. Here, it is an overall decision by the individual who hires for the plane. From a long list, they get to pick exact landing spotted after which concerned individuals make necessary arrangements. Generally, it satisfies them to learn that they are in control.

The limited number of passengers and crew involved lessens the details about searches and security protocol thus saving on crucial time. Queuing is thus not an option as there is particular need for such of course, unless there are special concerns. The travelling demands appearance of the passengers at appointed times only reducing unnecessary stress.

After learning of individual fight details, what remains is to contact a charter private jet broker. They then try to match up aircraft operators with the client. Typically, they have access to fine networks of operators and individual owners who in turn provide their customers with a number of planes to select from. These include the largest and most luxurious, versatile mid-sized and smaller and more economical light and very light ones. Depending on the nature of negotiations, the more the options one has hence better pricing as well.

Golf-Bradley grabs early clubhouse lead as Woods sizzles

AKRON, Ohio | Fri Aug 2, 2013 8:00pm BST

AKRON, Ohio Aug 2 (Reuters) - While Tiger Woods made an explosive birdie-eagle-birdie start to move two strokes clear in Friday's second round at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, defending champion Keegan Bradley seized the clubhouse lead.

American Bradley, who triumphed by one shot at Firestone Country Club last year after closing with a superb six-under-par 64, maintained his bid for a fourth career victory on the PGA Tour by shooting a 68.

On a warm but breezy day, Bradley birdied four of his first 11 holes before running up two bogeys over the closing stretch to post a six-under total of 134.

That left him a stroke in front of compatriot Bill Haas, who also carded a 68 despite not striking the ball at his very best.

PGA Tour veteran Jim Furyk and England's former world number one Luke Donald were level at four under after returning matching 69s but most eyes were firmly focused on the fast-starting Woods who has always relished playing at Firestone.

Winner here a record seven times in the elite World Golf Championships (WGC) event, Woods knocked in a three-footer to birdie the par-four first before draining a 20-foot eagle putt at the par-five second.

The world number one, who has won a season-high four times on the PGA Tour, then rolled in a 12-footer at the par-four third to forge two ahead of the chasing pack in a field of 73 players.

Though Bradley was delighted with his own position heading into the weekend, he was wary of the pre-tournament favourite.

"Those first couple holes out there are definitely birdie holes, so I'd expect him to do that," Bradley said of the sizzling start made by Woods. "I hope he doesn't go too low, but I'm in a good spot going into the weekend regardless.

"My game feels really sharp right now. Everything that I've done this week so far has felt really good, putting, driving the ball, irons. I haven't gotten the most out of both my rounds, so hopefully tomorrow I can do that.

"This time of year my game always kind of comes around, and I start to play better," added Bradley, who clinched his first major title at the 2011 PGA Championship.

HAPPY HAAS

Haas, who won his fifth PGA Tour title at the AT&T National in June, was happy enough with his 67-68 start on the challenging, 7,400-yard South Course at Firestone.

"Pretty solid ball striking, maybe not ideal, but good enough, and just pretty consistent," he said. "I'm not striking it great, but when I've missed shots I've been able to save par.

"If the putter is feeling good and I have good thoughts with that. If that stays the same this weekend, hopefully I'll be there (contending) on Sunday. This week is a tough week, the golf course is playing as tough as I've seen it."

Northern Irish world number three Rory McIlroy, striving to turn his game around ahead of his title defence at next week's PGA Championship, carded a roller-coaster 71 to finish seven strokes off the clubhouse lead.

The double major winner hit only five of 14 fairways as he mixed three birdies with a double at the 14th and two bogeys for a one-over tally of 141, level with England's U.S. Open champion Justin Rose (72)

Newly crowned British Open champion Phil Mickelson was a further two strokes back after shooting a 71, alongside big South African Ernie Els (72).

Overnight leader Webb Simpson, who opened with an eight-birdie 64, was among the late starters. (Reporting by Mark Lamport-Stokes; Editing by Gene Cherry)

Man arrested for attempting to break into Kid Rock's home

By Gillian Spear, Writer, NBC News

Police arrested a man who attempted to break into musician Kid Rock?s Detroit-area home.

The 43-year-old man was seen on security cameras Wednesday afternoon, ramming the gate to Kid Rock?s Clarkston property with his white van. He then exited his van and tried, but failed, to break into the property, according to the Oakland County Sheriff?s Office. The man was on crutches.?

On Friday, Kid Rock, born Robert Ritchie,?wrote on his website that he would be offering a $5,000 reward to anyone with information that could lead to the perpetrator's arrest. Authorities, however, did not seem to think the culprit would be hard to find.

?Clearly, the combination of this vehicle and the person on crutches driving it should make it fairly obvious to someone who knows this individual,? said Oakland County Sheriff Michael McCabe in a press release.

The man was arrested at his home in Independence Township, Mich., on Saturday morning -- his 1994 white Ford van parked in the driveway.?

Authorities said the arrest came after recieving two tips but did not say if the individuals who provided these tips received the reward from Kid Rock.

In the post on his website, the musician made it clear that he does not take security lightly and warned, ?I am an avid hunter and marksman and I will not hesitate to shoot anyone who has myself or family in fear for our?lives.?

An arraignment will likely take place Monday. The man is meanwhile being held at the Oakland County Jail.

Critics question Newton Mayor Warren's record on affordable housing

Critics are questioning Mayor Setti Warren?s record on developing affordable housing in the wake of his decision to block a development for the chronically homeless in Waban.

Warren has repeatedly called himself an advocate for housing for low- to moderate-income families, but critics claim his administration has discouraged developers from coming forward with new plans.

Jennifer Van Campen, executive director of Metro West Collaborative Development, said affordable housing is difficult to develop, regardless of the community it?s in. Metro West is behind the Engine 6 proposal, and she said Warren?s recent actions underscore the need for political will and leadership.

"It?s unclear to me that this mayor has any political will to make things happen," said Van Campen.

Since Warren took office in 2009, only seven units of affordable housing have been approved for city-controlled federal funding ? a figure that would have more than doubled if the Engine 6 proposal of 10 studio apartments had been approved.

Warren defended his record in a prepared statement.

"I have always been a strong supporter of affordable housing and believe it is part of the ladder of opportunity for people in our community," Warren said.

Warren went on to say his administration has taken a proactive approach, and noted the new affordable units expected to be included in developments at the Austin Street parking lot and the Riverside MBTA station. He also said his administration has docketed items and helped to make changes to zoning laws to create further opportunities.

But some say the mayor?s actions have actual stifled chances to accommodate residents being pushed out by high property values. They point to changes by his administration that require any developer seeking city allocated federal funds for affordable housing to go through the same public bidding process the city has to -- a hurdle not required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that provides the funds.

Washington Street-based CAN-DO is the only affordable-housing developer to receive federal fund from the city since Warren took office. Executive Director Josephine McNeil said the nonprofit has a hard enough time building affordable units in Newton without the extra burdens put in place by the Warren administration.

"They are of the opinion that what they?re doing is increasing transparency and theoretically opening up the process for more people to be involved," said McNeil, "but the downside is that this new process is just adding time and making it a lengthier and more expensive process."

Affordable housing developers in Newton realistically have two options for adding to the existing stock. They can either rely on local, state and federal subsidies largely controlled by the city, or they can use the 40B state statute that essentially allows local zoning and density regulations to be circumvented.

The 40B projects are generally larger projects where 25 percent of the units are affordable and the rest are market-rate, though the entire property is included in the city?s total affordable housing-stock count under state law.

Of the city?s current housing stock, 7.5 percent is deemed affordable under state statutes. That number falls short of the state?s goal of 10 percent. A recent survey of the largest affordable housing units in the city found a waiting list of 1,766 applicants for existing properties.

According to the Newton Housing Authority website, the group's family housing program has a wait list of seven to 10 years for standard applicants and two to five years for emergency cases.

Alderman Ted Hess-Mahan, a mayoral candidate and former board member at CAN-DO, said the city should be doing more.

Hess-Mahan accused the Warren administration of discouraging developers from coming forward with affordable housing projects by not simply following the HUD guidelines.

"This mayor has really ignored that and gone for much more restrictive practices in order to look good rather than to do good," said Hess-Mahan.

Going through the public bidding process requires submitted documents to be airtight and come with the added cost of lawyer and architectural fees, Hess-Mahan said. Because of the extra costs expended there, developers often have having to make up the difference by selecting a low bidder that can?t perform the contract and either walks away or does a poor job.

"It?s part and parcel of policies that Mayor Warren has followed, which really discourage the creation of affordable housing in the city and only encourages getting around the process solely through going through 40B," said Hess-Mahan.

But the number of affordable units that are developed is a direct reflection of the market, according to Planning Director Candace Havens.

The city relies on developers to approach them, according to Havens, and that requires properties becoming available in the right price range. That?s easier said than done in a city with high property values and limited space left that hasn?t already been built on.

"In a community like Newton where we are over 90 percent built out, opportunity for development is scarce," said Havens.

Every five years the city submits a consolidated plan to HUD in order to receive federal funds for housing and community needs. This fall city officials will begin to prepare a new submittal for the project by soliciting public input in conjunction with its annual action plan, according to Havens.

Warren tabled discussion on the Engine 6 proposal weeks before a looming funding deadline for the project, in the wake of residents? concerns over safety and impact on the character of their neighborhood. At the time he said community meetings would be held on a yet-to-be determined date in the fall to have a broader discussion about affordable housing and how the city administers its programs.

"It makes a lot of sense to bring those things together at that time," said Havens. "That?s a point of time where we?re looking at what we plan to do over the next five years of time, and explore if there?s a way if we can do it better."

UK bolsters consumer safety in financial products

LONDON (Reuters) - Four British consumer and business bodies have taken legal steps that could compel the regulator to take swift action to end scams after years of financial product mis-selling.

In a bid to end the litany of mis-selling which stretches back to the 1980s with pensions and home loans, Britain's finance ministry said on Wednesday that four bodies have applied for "super complainant" status.

This means that if they collate enough documented evidence that consumers of financial services are being ripped off, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulator must say within 90 days what action, if any, it will take.

Banks have paid over 10 billion pounds in compensation so far for selling unsuitable loan insurance, a mounting bill that forced Barclays on Tuesday to announce plans to replenish its capital buffer.

One of the applicants for super complainant status, the Federation of Small Businesses, is representing companies who believe they were mis-sold interest rate protection by banks.

The FCA replaced the Financial Services Authority in April, which was scrapped partly because of mis-selling scandals. The FCA has a remit to protect consumers with its powers to ban products.

"By giving certain consumer and business groups the ability to make ?super-complaints' to the new regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority, we can all help to tackle bad practice more rapidly and robustly than before," UK financial services minister Greg Clark said in a statement.

The other three bodies are the Citizens Advice Bureau, consumers association Which?, and Consumer Council Northern Ireland. Others are expected and a decision on who will be granted super complainant status will be taken later this year.

Britain passed a law in 2012 making it possible for consumer bodies to become super complainants and called in March for applicants.

HTC may post first operating loss in Q3, company warns

HTC financials

‘Higher cost structure, lack of economy of scale’ could lead to first loss in company’s history

HTC has today released finalized second-quarter financial results, and with it a warning that it may slip into an operating loss during the third quarter. Q2 revenue was reported at NT$70.7 billion ($2.37 billion), with gross margin of 23.2% and operating margin of 1.5%. Net profit was NT$1.25 billion ($40 million), while EPS was NT$1.50 ($0.05). The numbers show little change from HTC’s unaudited figures, released earlier in the month. The company met its own revenue targets, but profits fell by 83 percent year-on-year, and the monthly breakdown showed that revenues fell almost 24 percent from May to June.

Worse still, the company’s Q3 outlook predicts an operating margin of between 0 and -8 percent, suggesting HTC could make first ever loss in the next quarter. HTC blames “relatively higher cost structure, lack of economy of scale and certain provisions needed to facilitate the clearance of aging products in the channel” for its reduced margins. However it pointed out that the HTC One has so far performed strongly, “better than that of our hero products for the same period last year,” adding that its new flagship has helped improve its brand awareness.

HTC also says it plans to release more competitive products in the mid-range space — a likely reference to new devices including the recently-launched HTC One Mini — saying it hopes “to regain momentum and market share in these segments in Q4.”

And that sentiment is echoed in reference to the company’s financial performance. “Actions have been taken,” today’s news release states, “and we expect to see improvement in Q4.”

Nuvilex's Medical Marijuana Segment Could Mirror Israel's Success

SOURCE: Goldman Small Cap Research, Inc.

BALTIMORE, MD--(Marketwired - Jul 31, 2013) - Goldman Small Cap Research, a stock market research firm focused on the small cap and microcap sectors, notes that considering the success of some of the programs in Israel in treating cancer patients with cannabis, Nuvilex Inc.'s (OTCQB: NVLX) subsidiary, Medical Marijuana Sciences, Inc. may elect to emulate some of that country's initiatives.

In Israel, the medical-marijuana industry has flourished. Today, medical marijuana is prescribed to 11,000 patients, up from 1,800 in 2009, according to the Israeli Health Ministry. It is used to treat an extensive list of illnesses including cancer, Parkinson's, Tourette syndrome, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Importantly, while some cancer patients do smoke medical marijuana, in most cases, the drug is delivered via pill, liquid, food and even vapor. These delivery method alternatives are a bit broader than what is typically found in the U.S.

Perhaps the reason for the forward-thinking of Israeli scientists is the long history of medical marijuana research in Israel, which according to a recent article in Tablet magazine, traces its roots to nearly 50 years ago.

Much like in the U.S., despite the presence of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) inherent in cannabis that is responsible for the "high," Israeli researchers prefer to remove the THC and raise the concentration of the non-psychoactive cannabidiol, or CBD, which has documented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In fact, in the 1960's, Israel was a world leader in research on marijuana and its components conducted under the so-called grandfather of cannabis, professor Raphael Mechoulam of Hebrew University, who first isolated the THC component.

Going forward, as Americans continue to embrace the use of marijuana for its medicinal properties coupled with the elimination of THC from cannabis "extracts" and a concentration on the use of CBD as a therapeutic agent, Nuvilex's choice of developing CBD-based treatments for serious cancers becomes validated. Furthermore, a combination therapy for pancreatic cancer that combines a CBD-based treatment with its high profile live-cell encapsulation-based treatment for that disease may well be in Nuvilex's future.

Since the summertime is also a vacation period for the country's legislators, the medical marijuana space has been a bit quiet of late. However, once legislatures return to session, it is likely that this industry segment will enjoy accelerated opportunities.

(AP) ? Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle firmly believes the city can become a baseball town once again.

At the rate his team is going, it might be by the end of the week.

Alex Presley hit a game-ending single with two outs in the 11th inning, lifting the Pirates to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a doubleheader on Tuesday.

Presley hit a sharp bouncer that deflected off the glove of pitcher Kevin Siegrist (0-1) and away from shortstop Pete Kozma, who was moving toward second base. Kozma could not recover and the ball rolled into the outfield, allowing Russell Martin to sprint all the way home from second base.

With the win, the Pirates moved into first-place in the NL Central, at least for a few hours.

"It's a battle, it's fun," said Pittsburgh starter A.J. Burnett. "Let's roll from here. Let's keep going."

The win gave Pittsburgh its second victory in less than 24 hours over the Cardinals, who have lost a season-high five straight. Burnett pitched seven emotionally charged innings, giving up one run on three hits, striking out nine and walking three. Though he has just one victory since May 3, Burnett's performance set the tone and the bullpen followed his lead.

Vin Mazzaro (6-2) picked up the victory after retiring three of the four batters he faced in the 11th.

The Cardinals lead the NL in runs and batting average, but have scored just five runs in their last 47 innings and went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position in the opener.

"We had some hard-hit balls with runners in scoring position," manager Mike Matheny said. "It just didn't work out."

St. Louis' best chance came in the 10th when they put runners on the corners with one out. Matt Holliday ripped a grounder that Pittsburgh shortstop Clint Barmes backhanded and turned into Holliday's NL-leading 24th double play of the season.

Lance Lynn was dominant in six innings for the Cardinals, but was long gone by the time Presley came through against Siegrist.

"He was right on, everything he was doing today," Matheny said of Lynn. "If we keep him doing it the rest of the season we're going to win a lot of games."

The Pirates survived by doing what they've done for most of the first four months of the season, riding another stellar effort from baseball's top pitching staff and getting just enough hitting to win.

Presley's slapper capped a 3-hour, 52-minute marathon that had all the makings of playoff baseball. A packed PNC Park ? on a Tuesday afternoon no less ? buzzed as Burnett and Lynn matched each other for the better part of two hours.

Burnett received a bit of help with two on and one out in the first when center fielder Andrew McCutchen made a diving grab of a sinking liner by Carlos Beltran. The Gold Glover then hopped to his feet and alertly doubled up Holliday.

Jay struck out swinging leading off the sixth but moved all the way to second when the ball slipped away from Martin, the Pirates' catcher, and rolled toward the backstop. Martin strolled to pick up the ball, thinking it was foul, allowing Jay to reach second base.

Martin, Burnett and Hurdle began an animated discussion with home plate umpire Eric Cooper that spilled over into Holliday's at-bat. At one point Cooper came out from behind the plate and walked toward Burnett, pointing at the pitcher and yelling.

The call, however, seemed only to fire up Burnett. The fiery ace struck out Holliday, got Beltran to fly out to left and knocked down a grounder by Mike Adams before emphatically firing to first to beat the lumbering Adams to the bag to get out of the inning.

The histrionics were even louder in the seventh when Burnett struck out pinch-hitter Allen Craig with the 113th and final pitch of his day. Burnett let loose an elaborate fist-pump before making his way to the dugout following arguably his sharpest outing of the season.

Lynn was just as spectacular. He needed to be on a day when he didn't receive the kind of backing that allowed him to enter the game with 12 victories, the second-highest total in the National League.

Pittsburgh scratched across a run in the first when Alvarez doubled home McCutchen, but the Pirates didn't get a runner to third over Lynn's final five innings. He allowed one run on three hits, striking out seven and walking just two.

NOTES: Cardinals CF Jon Jay's team record for consecutive errorless games ended at 245 when he misplayed a single by Pittsburgh's Starling Marte in the fifth inning that allowed Marte to advance to second. Jay's previous error came on Aug. 24, 2011 ... St. Louis sent struggling reliever Marc Rzepczynski to Cleveland on Tuesday in exchange for minor league infielder Juan Herrera. Rzepczynski had a 7.84 ERA in 10 1-3 innings this season with the Cardinals ... Pirates 2009 first-round pick Tony Sanchez will get his first big-league start at catcher in the nightcap.

New Cancer drug cures 96 % of men

Ten-year survival rates have surged almost 30 per cent in the last 40 years, said Cancer Research UK.

More than 96pc of treated men are still alive after 10 years, compared with fewer than 70pc in the 1970s.

Although there is a chance of recurrence after 10 years, they are considered effectively cured. Each year around 2,300 new cases are diagnosed in the UK. It strikes at a relatively young age, being most common in men aged 15 to 49.

Dr Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research UK, said: ?A clear success story has been the drug cisplatin, which our scientists helped to develop.

?This is helping almost all men with the cancer to beat the disease and is a shining example of what we can achieve.

?The word ?cure? is almost a reality with 96pc of men helped. But it?s important to recognise the 4pc who don?t survive. Only research can bring forward the day when we?re able to beat all types of cancer.?

News in Brief: Cassini photo puts Earth in perspective

Probe captures planet from 1.4 billion kilometers away

By Andrew Grant

Web edition: July 25, 2013

NASA, JPL-Caltech, Space Science Institute

It?s more of a bright blue blotch than a pale blue dot, but Earth still looks awfully insignificant in this July 19 photograph. It was taken by NASA?s Cassini probe, which is more than 1.4 billion kilometers away in orbit around Saturn.

Earth is just right of center in the photo, while the moon is barely visible as a protrusion off Earth?s right side. Saturn dominates the upper left of the image and the planet?s rings are brightly illuminated.

Twenty-three years ago, unbeknownst to all but a handful of Earthlings, the NASA probe Voyager 1 took the famous Pale Blue Dot portrait of Earth, showing it as a tiny speck in the vastness of space. This time, there was advance warning. Carolyn Porco, who was on the Voyager team and now leads Cassini?s imaging efforts, announced the new photo shoot in June. ?

The Cassini probe has been exploring Saturn and its moons since 2004. The new image is one tile of a 33-tile mosaic that will include Saturn and its entire ring system. The full portrait is expected in several weeks.

Home Equity Loans with Less Than Perfect Credit Available ?

Home ? > ? Home Equity ? > ? Home Equity Loans with Less Than Perfect Credit Available ? By admin on July 24, 2013

Having bad credit puts you in an unenviable place financially. It is no fun at all. Being eligible for a home equity loan with bad credit can be problematic but it is not entirely impossible, if you research loan options properly.

A home equity loan (HEL) is a kind of loan whereby the borrower uses the equity they have in their home as collateral to finance another type of loan or a major expense. The longer you have owned your home for the more equity you will have. Think of it as a lien against the borrower?s home.

In most cases only those with good credit will qualify for this type of loan. But it does not mean that these loans are not within reach of those with poor or bad credit if you provide documentation. It not like providing unsecured loans information.

A home equity loan may actually be one of the few types of loans than will cost you less when your credit is less than perfect. This kind of loan is secured because it is tied into your home?s value.

What this translates to is the fact that interest rates are lower than they are on credit cards and other types of loans, such as auto loans or personal loans. The fact that it is a secured loan also means that the lender takes less of a risk on a borrower. That makes home equity loans with bad credit easier to be approved for.

Before you do another thing, you need to figure out the value of your home. In other words, how much equity do you have in it. The housing market in the area you live in can influence the value of your residence.

However in most cases the value of a house goes up with the passage of time as opposed to down. To find out a house?s worth you need to have it appraised.

This will have to be done if you wish to apply for a home equity loan, regardless of whether you have good credit or not. This is the equation for home equity.

It is the value of a residence minus the remainder left on the mortgage, including any debts or liens that are against the house. The loan you would qualify for with your home equity used as collateral would then be considered a secured loan.

If you wish to qualify for?home equity loans?with bad credit then it is imperative that you make regular payments on all of your bills and any debts you have. This establishes you as a responsible individual in terms of how you handle your money.

It will also help your credit score to start to rise instead of fall. It is also important that you have a steady enough income coming in that you can show the lender that you have enough money to pay the home equity loan payments as well as all of your current debts

Hasbro suffers as action figures lose sheen in iPad era

By Dhanya Skariachan

(Reuters) - A shift by young boys from action figures to iPads and other mobile devices has hurt Hasbro Inc , which posted lower-than-expected quarterly earnings on Monday.

The second-largest U.S. toymaker, home to G.I. Joe, Nerf and Mr. Potato Head, said revenue in its boys' toy business fell 35 percent to $253.7 million in the second quarter, overshadowing growth in the girls, games, and preschool units. Hasbro's boy segment has posted sales declines in five consecutive quarters.

Hasbro was the third toymaker to fall short of Wall Street expectations in the second quarter. Unlike the second quarter of 2012, Hasbro had fewer movie franchises supporting its toys modeled on Marvel characters such as Spider-Man and the Avengers this year.

Hasbro's traditional action figures and other toys are competing for boys' attention with electronics, iPads and mobile devices, MKM Partners analyst Eric Handler said.

"Girls still have a very much of a nurturing element and still play with dolls. Boys are gravitating toward electronics at an earlier age now," Handler said.

Last week, larger rival Mattel Inc posted a much weaker-than-expected profit on sluggish Barbie doll sales, and smaller toymaker Jakks Pacific Inc slashed its full-year forecast, saying several retailers in the United States and Europe had cut orders for its key products.

Analysts, including Handler and Needham's Sean McGowan, said investors should not to read too much into the second quarter as it is a seasonally weak period for toymakers. Both analysts like Mattel shares over Hasbro going into the 2013 second half.

DISNEY DEAL

Hasbro's second-quarter net profit fell to $36.5 million, or 28 cents a share, from $43.4 million, or 33 cents a share, a year earlier.

Excluding a pension charge, it earned 29 cents a share, missing analysts' average estimate of 34 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Hasbro shares were up 1.8 percent to $46.21 in morning trading on the Nasdaq. At least two analysts tied the rise to investors covering short positions. At the end of June, about 15 percent of Hasbro's outstanding shares were held in short positions, according to data from Nasdaq. Average short interest is about 3 percent.

The company, which counts retailers Wal-Mart Stores Inc , Target Corp and Toys R Us Inc among its customers, said second-quarter sales fell 6 percent to $766.3 million. Analysts expected $794.7 million.

Hasbro said it had expanded its partnership with Walt Disney Co , getting the rights to make toys and games for Marvel characters such as Spider-Man, the Avengers and Iron Man through 2020. Hasbro's rights for the Star Wars franchise, which Disney bought recently, also runs through 2020.

Sub-saharan water: Not just fossil water

[unable to retrieve full-text content]The Sahara conceals large quantities of water stored at depth and inherited from ancient times. A recent study has just shown that this groundwater is not entirely fossil, but resupplied every year. Using a method based on data obtained by satellite, scientists estimated the variations in the volume of water lying under the northern Sahara desert: the current rate of recharge is on average 1.4 km3 per year, for the period 2003-2010. This represents 40% of withdrawals, mainly for irrigation to support the oasis economy. The inputs therefore do not compensate for the withdrawals, but their existence means that these transboundary aquifers, the main water resource of semi-arid regions in Algeria and Tunisia, could be managed sustainably.

Michael B. Fishbein: Startup Advice from David S. Kidder

David S. Kidder is a serial entrepreneur and angel investor. Currently, he's the co-founder and CEO of Bionic, an enterprise innovation platform. Prior to Bionic, David served as the co-founder and CEO of Clickable (acquired by Syncapse). Prior to Clickable, Kidder co-founded SmartRay Network (acquired by LifeMinders), and Net-X (acquired by Target Vision). In January 2013, he published The Startup Playbook, which leverages his insider access to reveal the experiences and advice of over 40 of the world's leading entrepreneurs.

When I interviewed David last week, he shared some amazing advice on starting a company, hiring, and more. I've summarized my key takeaways from our conversation below.

Starting a Company

  • When starting a company, trust your innate gifts. Mold the company around these gifts so you're working towards something that's at your highest level of interest and purpose.
  • Entrepreneurship is a career, not an outcome. It takes a long time to become good at it.
  • In The Startup Playbook, David asked the entrepreneurs what percentage of their economic outcome they attribute to good fortune, timing, or simply luck - across the board, all answered that 70% of their success was due to luck. Luck is the intersection of hard work and good fortune. An incredible amount of things need to go right (or not go wrong) at exactly the right time for you to succeed.
  • Being a successful entrepreneur is a hero's journey. The uncertainty and possibility leads to incredible learning and growth for you as a person -- it's about who you are capable of becoming, not who you are. The fact that there is no safety net at all forces maturity on you.

Silicon Alley vs. Silicon Valley

  • Silicon Valley is 20 years ahead of New York City's Silicon Alley in terms of network, capital, acquisitions, etc. This is because it takes a long time for communities to evolve. You need institutions, large acquiring companies, and a strong network of talent. New York has been steadily improving in these areas; there are now significant investment cohorts coming through NYC.
  • However, Silicon Valley also has a downside: it's an echo chamber. Everyone has similar experiences and influences, which can lead to groupthink. New York City has more cultural diversity and a more open community than Silicon Valley, which is more insular.
  • In the Valley, larger established companies will acquire startups just to gain competitive technical advances, or because the smaller company's technology or intellectual property is appealing. Business in New York City is much more finance-driven.

Productivity

  • If you need sleep, you shouldn't start a company. You have to be able to work more hours and juggle more things than the average individual. This requires exceptional productivity skills.
  • Delegating is key. Quit areas of weakness and commitments that don't drive growth. Don't do something just because you can do it well; go with what's going to add the most value to your product or service.

Enterprise Sales

  • Relationships are key when selling into the Enterprise marketplace. If you have a relationship with a C-level executive, it can take days for a deal to happen. But if you're going in at the VP level, it can take a year or more. Selling effectively requires more than just a great product. You need great reputational signaling and great relationships.

Corporate Innovation

  • Not for a lack of desire or talent, large companies haven't been able to grow at a startup's pace. They've been in the efficiency game too long, acting as administrators of what they have instead of creators of something new. They're accustomed to seeking growth through mergers and acquisitions, as opposed to new ventures.
  • Startups have a high failure rate, and that's generally not acceptable in the world of enterprise. But in today's rapidly changing economy, more big businesses are finding that they need to foster a culture similar to that of a startup.

Hiring

  • Be extremely careful about selecting and curating your team. Making a mistake in this area is one of the only things that can be fatal, as one wrong hire in the beginning can screw up an entire company.

David's favorite interview questions for potential hires:

1. "Tell me something I don't know about my business." By their answers, you can tell if people have done their homework or not.
2. "On a scale from 1 - 10, how fortunate are you and why?" With this question, you can get a better picture of the individual by learning about his or her whole life. You can also get answers to questions that you're not legally allowed to ask.
3. "What did people most misunderstand about you at your last job?" While a candidate will often tell you why their former teammates didn't like them, the way they explain themselves can reveal much about how they would fit into your team, and the company's overall culture.
