Caregivers and Seniors in Deerfield, IL - Home Care Chicago

Special Labor Day activities for seniors can be fun, informative, and therapeutic. Caregivers working with special challenges from lack of enthusiasm to more serious mental or physical limitations can easily adapt activities to suit circumstances.

Memory retrieval, problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills are compromised with age. The chances of dementia and Alzheimer?s disease increase with the years. The more the brain is used, the better it will process and remember information. The best brain exercises involve socialization, challenges, and fun. Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health reported that those with the most active social lives had the slowest rate of memory decline.

Actively reminiscing helps the brain to boost memory. Attitudes improve along with the mood if the memories are pleasant. Prepare prompts ahead of time to control the direction of the dialog. Examples might be: What was your favorite Labor Day? Did your family attend Labor Day Parades? What was you favorite job? What other career attracted you? What changes and differences did you see in the work place from the beginning of your career to your retirement? What was the funniest thing ever to happen to you at work? What would you advise your grandchildren who were planning to work in your field?

Don?t forget to employ visual aids. Make a Timeline on a poster board ahead of time and fill in a few simple references. There are free timeline samples online and a simple memory jogger such as dates of presidential terms will suffice. Photos of specialized tools used or past fashionable work clothing are also great for jumpstarting a memory.

Ask about co-workers and friends made at work.

Make a videotape or a tape recording or a simple notebook, but date and record this living history. Seniors particularly need the validation of knowing that their lives and experiences are valuable. Holidays are perfect opportunities for caregivers to reaffirm seniors? worth and their contributions. Labor Day is particularly appropriate as it celebrates working men and women and their role in society.

Many elderly people find new sparks of interest in life with arts or crafts. Whether new or a rediscovery of past hobbies, pleasure is derived from purpose. Make a note if a memory seems especially joyful or interesting. A retired seamstress may enjoy designing clothing for paper dolls; a mechanic may be interested in collecting miniature cars ? or in automobile models.

5 Fun Diet and Fitness Alternatives

Fed up of fitness classes? Sick of salads? Healthy living doesn?t have to be hard work! While we don?t advise you cut out exercise and healthy eating entirely, for those moments when you just don?t feel like being healthy, try these fun alternatives instead.

Fun diet and fitness alternative 1: Laughter

If you?re having a day off from exercise, the good news is you could still get the same health benefits as you would from a workout simply through having a laugh. Research studies led by Dr Lee Berk of Loma University have found that repetitious sessions of ?mirthful laughter? have similar effects on the body as moderate exercise; improving your mood, lowering blood pressure, reducing bad cholesterol and enhancing the immune system.

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have also found that regular laughter may be as good for your heart as exercise. Their research suggests that 15 minutes of laughter a day helps blood vessels to function better and has similar health benefits to a workout. Consequently, while exercise is essential for good health, swapping the odd gym session for a comedy club or funny movie?may not be as bad a swap as you think.

Fun diet and fitness alternative 2: Popcorn

Craving a snack but not feeling tempted by the fruit bowl? Tucking into some popcorn could be a great healthy alternative. Research led by Joe Vinson, a researcher for the University of Scranton, has found that popcorn contains almost double the amount of antioxidant polyphenols (which can help protect against chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease) per serving as fruits and vegetables.

On top of this, popcorn, according to Vinson, is the only snack that is 100 per cent unprocessed whole grain. Popcorn is packed with fibre (perfect for keeping you feeling full and improving your digestion), can help lower cholesterol, is low in calories and contains B vitamins. While it should not replace nutrient-rich fruit and veg entirely, popcorn is a great occasional swap for a healthy diet, so long as you cut down on the sugar, salt and oils. To retain its health benefits, air-popped popcorn is best. Serve plain or seasoned with Italian seasonings, chilli powder or other herbs and spices.

Fun diet and fitness alternative 3: Chocolate

Good news for chocaholics ? scientists have discovered that small amounts of dark chocolate can improve your health in a similar way to exercise! Researchers from Wayne State University found that a plant compound (epicatechin) found in chocolate stimulated the same muscle response as vigorous exercise, which could help to slow down muscle ageing.

Furthermore, research has suggested that chocolate could be almost as healthy as fruit. When tested and compared to juices from ?superfruits? such as blueberries and pomegranate, dark chocolate was found to be higher in antioxidants, which are essential for fighting disease and preventing wrinkles. While it is not recommended you ditch fruit and exercise for a king-sized chocolate bar, snacking on small amounts of dark chocolate can be a tasty way to boost your health.

Fun diet and fitness alternative 4: Music

One of the best benefits of a healthy lifestyle is a longer life span and improved immunity, and now scientists have found an even easier way to get these health benefits: listening to music. Yep, researchers have found a whole host of benefits attached to this common pastime! A study by Sussex University and the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, found that listening to uplifting music?for just 50 minutes increased levels of disease-fighting antibodies and lowered stress.

Meanwhile, researchers at the University of ?Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore found that listening to music that makes you feel good is beneficial to cardiovascular health. Other suggested health benefits of listening to music include improved pain relief, quicker recovery from operations and better mental health. Try using music as a supplement to your healthy lifestyle ? research by Brunel University has even found that listening to music while working out can boost your exercise endurance by 15 per cent!

Fun diet and fitness alternative 5: Sunshine

Many of us are conscious of the importance of healthy eating for getting our recommended vitamin intake. However, one health-boosting nutrient can be obtained in a more leisurely and effortless way ? simply by spending some time in the sunshine. Our body produces vitamin D when exposed to the sun; a nutrient which is essential for good health.

Those deficient in vitamin D are at greater risk of developing certain cancers, osteoporosis, mental illness and heart disease. In fact, while the dangers of too much sun exposure are well-known, a study by Robyn Lucas of Australian National University suggests that more lives are lost to diseases caused by too little sunlight than from those generated by too much. While it is essential to take care in the sun, experts recommend we spend 10 minutes in the sun each day without sunblock, so try taking a stroll in the sunshine for a cheap and enjoyable way to boost your health.

Uncoiling the cucumber's enigma: Biological mechanism for coiling, and unusual type of spring discovered

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? In the creeping plant's tendrils, researchers discover a biological mechanism for coiling and stumble upon an unusual type of spring

Captivated by a strange coiling behavior in the grasping tendrils of the cucumber plant, researchers at Harvard University have characterized a new type of spring that is soft when pulled gently and stiff when pulled strongly.

Instead of unwinding to a flat ribbon under stress, as an untwisted coil normally would, the cucumber's tendrils actually coil further. Understanding this counterintuitive behavior required a combination of head scratching, physical modeling, mathematical modeling, and cell biology -- not to mention a large quantity of silicone.

The result, published in the August 31 issue of Science, describes the mechanism by which coiling occurs in the cucumber plant and suggests a new type of bio-inspired twistless spring.

Led by principal investigator L. Mahadevan, Lola England de Valpine Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology and Professor of Physics at Harvard, and a Core Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, the researchers were motivated by simple curiosity about the natural world.

"Nature has solved all kinds of energetic and mechanical problems, doing it very slowly and really getting it right," says lead author Sharon Gerbode, a former postdoctoral fellow at SEAS who has now advanced to a faculty position in the physics department at Harvey Mudd College. "But few people have studied biological mechanisms from the point of view of a physicist or an engineer. We barely had to scratch the surface with this question about the cucumber -- how does it coil? What could be a simpler question? And what we actually found was this new kind of spring that no one had characterized before."

Well known to botanists and gardeners, the coiling tendrils of climbing plants like cucumbers, sweet peas, and grape vines allow the plants to hoist themselves up towards sunlight and secure themselves tightly to existing structures like trees or trellises. Yet the biological and physical mechanism of this coiling, at the level of the plant's cells and tissues, has remained a mystery.

A cucumber tendril begins as a straight stem that elongates until it finds something to latch onto. Then, secured at both ends, it forms a left-handed helix and a right-handed helix, joined at the center by a "perversion" -- Charles Darwin's strikingly Victorian term for the point at which the coiling changes direction.

"It's easy to create one of these twistless springs with a telephone cord," says Gerbode, "and they're annoying. But with the phone cord, you can pull on both ends and it will straighten out into a flat ribbon. What's strange about the cucumber tendril is that if you pull on the ends, it actually overwinds, adding more turns to both helices."

To explore the mechanism for this behavior, Gerbode and her Harvard colleagues took a closer look at the cells and tissue types inside the tendril.

A fibrous ribbon, made of thread-like cells called gelatinous fiber (g-fiber) cells, runs the length of each tendril. Two cell layers thick, this ribbon appears to provide the force required for the tendril to form a helix without the benefit of muscles. If the cells on one side of such a ribbon were to contract, the researchers thought, it would force the ribbon to curve and coil.

Gerbode and her coauthor Joshua Puzey (Ph.D. '12), who was studying organismic and evolutionary biology in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at the time, tried to reconstruct this fiber ribbon with a silicone model. They stretched a sheet of elastic silicone, secured the ends, and then spread a thin layer of silicone caulk across its surface. When the caulk cured, they cut a thin strip off the model, held both ends, and watched it coil into a pair of perfect helices. When they pulled on both ends, however, it simply unraveled and lay flat, adding no extra coils as they had hoped.

"This is when I spent a lot of time pulling on telephone cords," Gerbode admits.

The clue, as it turns out, was inside the g-fiber cells. These cells have been studied extensively in trees; they have the ability to shrink or elongate, thanks to a special type of architecture in the cell wall.

"What we think may be happening is that the inner cell layer of the tendril has more lignin in it, which is a sort of glue that gives cell walls stiffness and holds together the cellulose microfibrils, which are like rebar in the cells," explains Puzey. "We thought this stiffness must be related to the coiling somehow."

To test this idea, Gerbode and Puzey glued a fabric ribbon to one side of their silicone model and a copper wire to the other side. At last, the silicone strip formed a pair of helices that overwound, just like the cucumber tendril.

The structure they stumbled upon is a spring made of two joined, opposite-handed helices whose bending stiffness is higher than their twisting stiffness. In other words, to form this specific structure, the materials involved have to make it easier for the ribbon to twist axially than to change its curvature. Through mathematical models developed by Mahadevan and coauthor Andrew McCormick (a physics graduate student in GSAS), the team was able to fully understand the parameters and synthesize a simple principle for the design of these springs.

The final stage in the research was to address the biological implications. By extracting the fiber ribbon from a cucumber tendril, Mahadevan's group had already noticed that moisture was playing a role in the spring's behavior. As the extracted ribbon dried out, its stiffness increased and it coiled more tightly. Lignin is also known to be hydrophobic, repelling water. What's more, Mahadevan's team measured the mechanical response of young tendrils and older ones, finding that the older tendrils put up much more resistance to pulling, a fact that they explained using a combination of theory and computer simulations.

Though the group has not yet explored these findings from an evolutionary perspective, they hypothesize that the mature coil structure allows the climbing plants just the right amount of structural flexibility.

"You want the plant to make a nice strong, secure connection, but you also don't want it to be too stiff or to snap," explains Gerbode. "You want it to have a little bit of flexibility so that if the wind blows or an animal brushes past it, it doesn't break. So one possibility is that this overwinding allows the plant to easily accommodate small motions, but then if something really serious happens it can get very stiff and protect itself."

To further study the evolutionary significance of the tendril's morphology, researchers would have to study the coils in numerous species and attempt to reconstruct the evolutionary history of that characteristic. Mahadevan suggests that such a project could provide important ecological insights.

"The advantage of using a tendril is that the plant saves on complex machinery to build structural supports such as trunks and branches," Mahadevan says. "The disadvantage is that it must depend on other species to build these supports. Thus, tendrils are an adaptation that is likely to develop only in regions replete with vegetation that can provide supports and where competition for resources is intense.

"The real question remains this: how difficult is it to evolve such tendril-like solutions?"

Now that nature has done the hard work, though, Mahadevan suggests that the benefits of understanding cucumber coils might be useful in technology -- but hastens to add that this work was driven by pure curiosity, not with an end product in mind.

"This is likely to be useful anywhere we need a spring with a tunable mechanical response," he says.

This work was supported by the MacArthur Foundation, the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard, and the Kavli Institute for Bionano Science and Technology at Harvard. The researchers are now pursuing a patent on the technology, through the Wyss Institute.

Teach Your Kids and Teens the Dangers of Underage Drinking ...

?

Written By Chris Kuhn
Manager of Programs at The Century Council

USA.govWashington, D.C. ? Back to School is an exciting time for both students and parents as they prepare for a new school year and new challenges both in and out of the classroom. It also serves as a great time to remind students about the importance of staying safe and making healthy lifestyle choices.

The Century Council?s Ask Listen Learn: Kids and Alcohol Don?t Mix program provides youth, ages 9-14, and their parents with information about the dangers of underage drinking and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

In a recent survey conducted for The Century Council, it was noted that parents are the leading influence in their kid?s decision not to drink. The survey demonstrates the importance of parents and educators starting conversations with youth early and often about the risks and consequences surrounding underage drinking.

The Ask, Listen, Learn program provides materials for parents and instructors on how to start and continue the conversation with young people. The program also offers youth the opportunity to play fun kids? games, download printable activities, and read about Superstars like Olympian Steven Lopez, Soccer Hall of Famer Julie Foudy, and swimming champion Rebecca Soni.

According to the 2011 Monitoring the Future Study, nearly one third of 8th graders report they have tried alcohol once in their lifetime and 15 percent report they have been drunk. In a separate study, a majority (65 percent) of today?s youth who have consumed alcohol in the past year report family and friends as the leading source from which they get alcohol.

Make no mistake, tweens know what?s going on and they?re more than just a little curious about it. So before they?re presented with the opportunity, it?s critical to give them the information they need to make the right decision. Help support them by teaching them how to say ?Yes? to a healthy lifestyle and ?No? to underage drinking. Make sure that either as a parent, teacher, or caregiver, you get involved.

You can order free, single copies, of the Ask, Listen, Learn brochures for parents, educators and kids. If you?re interested in distributing the brochures at school or community events, you can also order these free publications in bulk quantities.

Hurricane Isaac makes landfall in La.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Hurricane Isaac raked the Louisiana coast and headed for a shuttered New Orleans late Tuesday, with brutal timing that made up for much of what it lacked in punch.

Just hours shy of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Isaac's approach left deserted streets from New Orleans' famous French Quarter to Tampa 480 miles away, where Republican conventioneers pressed on with only a passing mention of the storm's arrival.

A Category 1 hurricane with winds at 80 mph, Isaac came ashore at 6:45 p.m. CDT near the mouth of the Mississippi River in southeastern Louisiana, drenching a sparsely populated neck of land that stretches into the Gulf of Mexico. But the worst was still to come as the slow-moving storm chugged along on a track that would take it just west of New Orleans, roughly 70 miles to the north.

At 3 a.m. EDT Wednesday, the hurricane that once was crawling at a forward speed of 7 mph was nearly stationary near the southeast Louisiana coast, according to an advisory from the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. Isaac was forecast to over the next day or two to drift over that coast before heading inland, the center added.

While much less powerful than Katrina in 2005, Isaac unleashed fierce winds and soaking rains that knocked out power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses.

The storm drew intense scrutiny because of its timing ? just before the anniversary of the hurricane that devastated that city, while the first major speeches of the Republican National Convention went on in Tampa, Fla., already delayed and tempered by the storm.

While many residents stayed put, evacuations were ordered in low-lying areas of Louisiana and Mississippi, where officials closed 12 shorefront casinos.

One of the main concerns along the shoreline was storm surge, which occurs when hurricane winds raise sea levels off the coast, causing flooding on land.

A storm surge of 11 feet was reported at Shell Beach, Louisiana, late Tuesday while a surge of 6.9 feet was reported in Waveland, Mississippi, the Hurricane Center said.

Ed Rappaport, the center's deputy director, said Isaac's core would pass west of New Orleans with winds close to 80 mph and head for Baton Rouge.

"On this course, the hurricane will gradually weaken," Rappaport said. He said gusts could reach about 100 mph at times, especially at higher levels, which could damage high-rise buildings in New Orleans.

As Isaac neared the city, there was little fear or panic. With New Orleans' airport closed, tourists retreated to hotels and most denizens of a coastline that has witnessed countless hurricanes decided to ride out the storm.

"Isaac is the son of Abraham," said Margaret Thomas, who was trapped for a week in her home in New Orleans' Broadmoor neighborhood by Katrina's floodwaters, yet chose to stay put this time. "It's a special name. That means God will protect us."

Officials, chastened by memories and experience, advised caution.

"We don't expect a Katrina-like event, but remember there are things about a Category 1 storm that can kill you," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said, urging people to use common sense and to stay off any streets that may flood.

Tourists and residents alike appeared to have heeded that warning. Shortly after midnight in and around the French Quarter, streets normally packed with partiers were deserted, washed by sheets of rain and blown by winds that made hanging building signs swing wildly.

"Nobody is actually out here partying from what I've seen," said Jared Farrell, a parking valet for several hotels.

Tracy Smith, 26, a New Orleans resident who decided that she and her family would be safer at La Quinta hotel near the quarter than at home, ducked out shortly after midnight to gauge the storm's severity. Farrell yelled over to her to watch out for a restaurant sign that had become partially detached from a building and threatened to fly off.

Smith, a former deputy sheriff, was trapped for several days with about 100 inmates in a New Orleans jail during Hurricane Katrina, up to her waist in floodwaters. She is still haunted by the experience.

"That's why I was panicked for this storm," she said.

Tens of thousands of people were told to leave low-lying areas, including 700 patients of Louisiana nursing homes, but officials decided not to call for mass evacuations like those that preceded Katrina, which packed 135 mph winds in 2005.

Isaac also promised to test a New Orleans levee system bolstered after the catastrophic failures during Hurricane Katrina. But in a city that has already weathered Hurricane Gustav in 2008, calm prevailed.

"I feel safe," said Pamela Young, who settled in to her home in the Lower 9th Ward ? a neighborhood devastated by Katrina ? with dog Princess and her television. "Everybody's talking 'going, going,' but the thing is, when you go, there's no telling what will happen. The storm isn't going to just hit here."

Young, who lives in a new, two-story home built to replace the one destroyed by Katrina, said she wasn't worried about the levees.

"If the wind isn't too rough, I can stay right here," she said, tapping on her wooden living room coffee table. "If the water comes up, I can go upstairs."

While far less powerful than Katrina, Isaac posed similar political challenges, a reminder of how the storm seven years ago became a symbol of government ignorance and ineptitude.

Political fallout was already simmering. Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, who canceled his trip to the convention, said the Obama administration's disaster declaration fell short of the federal help he had requested, and asked for a promise to be reimbursed for storm preparation costs.

"We learned from past experiences, you can't just wait. You've got to push the federal bureaucracy," Jindal said.

FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said such requests would be addressed after the storm.

Obama promised that Americans will help each other recover, "no matter what this storm brings."

"When disaster strikes, we're not Democrats or Republicans first, we are Americans first," Obama said at a campaign rally at Iowa State University. "We're one family. We help our neighbors in need."

In Tampa, the storm's landfall did not appear to affect prime-time coverage or the Republican National Convention speeches. One of the few mentions of the storm came in the opening remarks by Ann Romney, wife of the Republican nominee.

"Just so you all know, the hurricane has hit landfall and I think we should take this moment and recognize that fellow Americans are in its path and just hope and pray that all remain safe and no life is lost and no property is lost," she told the crowd.

Outside, though, the streets of downtown Tampa were eerily deserted, a result of nasty weather from Isaac's outer bands, tight securities that blocked off streets and a delay in convention events because of fears the storm might target that side of the Gulf.

While politicians from both parties were careful to show their concern for those in the storm's path, Gulf residents and visitors tried to make the best of the situation on the ground.

In New Orleans' French Quarter, Hyatt hotel employee Nazareth Joseph braced for a busy week and fat overtime paychecks. Joseph said he was trapped in the city for several days after Katrina and helped neighbors escape the floodwaters.

"We made it through Katrina; we can definitely make it through this. It's going to take a lot more to run me. I know how to survive," he said.

Maureen McDonald of Long Beach, Ind., strolled the French Quarter on her 80th birthday wearing a poncho, accompanied by family who traveled from three different cities to meet her in New Orleans to celebrate.

"The storm hasn't slowed us down. We're having the best time," she said.

But farther east along the Gulf, veterans of past hurricanes made sure to take precautions.

At a highway rest stop along Alabama's I-10, Bonnie Schertler, 54, of Waveland, Miss., said she left her coastal home for her father's place in Alabama "because of the 'coulds.'"

"I just feel like the storm may stay for a few days and that wind might just pound and pound and pound and pound," said Schertler, whose former home in Waveland was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. A slow storm is more dangerous, she said, "'cause it can knock down just virtually everything if it just hovers forever."

Local officials, who imposed curfews in Mississippi's Harrison, Hancock and Jackson counties. And in Theodore, Ala., 148 people took refuge in a shelter at the town's high school by midday Tuesday, with minds focused as much on the past as on the present storm.

Charlotte McCrary, 41, at the shelter with husband, Bryan, and their two sons, 3-year-old Tristan and 1-year-old Gabriel, recalled the year she spent living in a FEMA trailer after Katrina destroyed her home.

Seven years later, the storm reminds her that she still hasn't gotten back to same place.

"I think what it is," Bryan McCrary said, "is it brings back a lot of bad memories."

Do-It-Yourself Airports Could Turn Travel Around ... - Business Insider

Here's another possible upside to do-it-yourself airports: Disabled people will begin to like traveling again.?

We recently wrote that airports are replacing humans with robots in an effort to streamline check-in processes.?

Consumer advocates like Christopher Elliott have said "there's not enough automation" and that the self-check kiosks are a good thing for travelers' sanity (and their wallets).?But smelling a job-killer, airline-employee unions have argued that it's the last thing fliers want.?

"Clearly, it's not something passengers are clamoring for," Frank Larkin, a spokesman for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers, told the Journal.?"More technology, fewer people? I don't think so."

Too bad he's in the minority. There are plenty of inefficiencies with manned check-ins, one of them being that disabled people have a ridiculously hard time boarding planes.?

According to CNN, their?frustrations run the gamut from having wheelchairs damaged to missing flight connections and losing access to airplane restrooms. One disabled man said he was stranded on the tarmac.?

So how will DIY airports change the game? Brett Snyder, president of Cranky Concierge and blogger at The Cranky Flier, believes agents will be less distracted if they're not dealing with minutiae like changing seats and checking bags for regular travelers.?

"For self-boarding, it just frees up agents to be able to do more important work," he said over email.?

And it won't kill many jobs.?

"Some will say (self-boarding) will simply reduce staffing further, but with many gates already staffed by only one person, it would be hard to reduce by a ton," Snyder said.?

So things won't be fully automated, just enough to make life easier.

As Elliott pointed out, "there will always be passengers who need a human touch. So maybe folks who can't use a computer or who have some trouble with a bar scanner."?

Or people who are bound to a wheelchair or are visually impaired.?

Whoever these disabled people are, it'll be nice to know they're finally getting the attention they deserve.?

Romney targeting former Obama supporters

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? In a presidential campaign filled with sharp criticism, this may be Mitt Romney's softest sell: persuading people who voted for Democrat Barack Obama and now have some buyer's remorse to back the Republican instead.

"We led with our hearts and our dreams that we could be more inclusive than America had ever been, and no candidate had ever spoken so beautifully," former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis of Alabama, who recently switched parties, told the Republican National Convention. "But dreams meet daybreak."

Davis, who seconded Obama's nomination at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in 2008, was the personification Tuesday of a bloc of voters who backed Obama four years ago but who now are disenchanted.

Romney is trying to lure these voters into his fold, and courting them was a theme of the first full night of his national nominating convention.

Republican nominee Romney is taking care not to insult these voters, whose support could be critical in key states where the race is tight. He is gently asking them to reconsider their past support of Obama, if they're not already.

"Ask one more person to join us, who supported President Obama four years ago and didn't get the change they deserved," Romney told an audience in Chillicothe, Ohio, this month.

He featured some of these disillusioned Obama voters in a short video at the convention Tuesday.

Among them: Debbie Smith of Iowa. "As the co-owner of a small business, I'm not supporting Barack Obama this time because I just don't see things getting better," Smith says in the video.

The 51-year-old from Des Moines helped launch Obama on the path to the presidency. The lifelong Democrat supported him in the 2008 Iowa caucuses, which Obama won. The win established him as the Democratic front-runner.

But Smith was unimpressed with Obama's handling of the debate over federal health insurance legislation in 2009 and then came to think he was not taking the growing federal debt seriously.

Like millions of voters in 2008, Smith had hoped in voting for Obama that his call for bipartisanship in a bitterly divided political environment would come to pass. Obama was able to cobble together a coalition of voters that also included disaffected Republicans turned off by the Bush administration's spending patterns.

Smith is not angry, just disappointed in changes she did not expect.

"I don't want to tell people who to vote for," Smith said in an interview. "I just want people to do their homework."

Romney's campaign is hoping to win over people like Smith in battleground states such as Iowa and Ohio, where the race is viewed as very close.

Iowa is symbolic because, after Obama won the caucuses, he carried the state in the general election by 9 percentage points, the biggest winning margin there in a quarter-century.

Romney's hoping he can also lure back those independents and moderate Republicans who walked away from the GOP for Obama.

Iowa is one of seven states where polls show neither Obama nor Romney has a significant advantage. The others are Ohio, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire and Virginia.

Another member of that voter group Romney's trying to lure is Ashley Bell of Georgia.

The lawyer was an Obama supporter in 2008. His wife, Lauren, was a delegate to the Democratic convention that year.

He said he respected that Obama, as a candidate, opposed requiring all Americans to obtain health insurance, a position he would change in signing the 2010 health care law, which includes a health insurance mandate.

Bell, who is African-American, said he voted for Obama because he viewed the Democrat as a pragmatist. He did not support Obama because he is black, although he was proud to back the first black president.

"We were excited in the moment. And we still have an affinity for the guy," Bell said. "But we had to look at the big picture."

Aides to Obama's campaign declined to comment about the Romney campaign's effort to woo the Democrat's past supporters. But they noted that Davis, who served four terms in the House, voted with Democrats 95 percent of the time before he left Congress in 2010.

Bits of Boardgames: Collection Building: Introduction Games

First impressions set the tone for a relationship of any kind. ?First impressions in the board game realm are just as important as impressions with people. ?Monopoly, Risk, Life, Trivial Pursuit, and games in that ilk are the standard of boardgames to most people. ?The bar is yet relatively low, but many people have a comfort with these games, and that has shaped what games should be in their mind.

Because of these preconceived notions, I feel like every gamer needs to have a game that they can pull out to show people what a designer board game is. ?Now, I run the risk of sounding really snobby here, so I'm doing my best to dance around that. ?Ultimately, we play games to have fun. ?If people have a good time playing Scrabble or Clue or Monopoly, that's great. ?I've done my best to never discourage people playing games, no matter what the game.

The goal of introductory games is to show people that there is a whole world of possibilities in games that they may not know about, and those games are something they might enjoy. ?As always, I'll provide a few examples, give my thoughts on them, and hopefully help you reach an idea of what you'd like to have in your collection.

Settlers of Catan?(3-4 players in the base, 5-6 with expansion)
This was the game that started it all for me. ?It was my first exposure to a game where everyone played the whole time, and had things to do even when it wasn't their turn. ?If you're not familiar with Settlers, you are trying to build settlements and cities with resources that you get on dice rolls. ?You'll rarely have everything you need, so you have to trade with other players. ?The dice are a comforting part of the game to players. ?The idea of trading is familiar, but the frequency is new to people. ?A lot of people can really get in to Catan and have fun the first time. ?Catan appeals best to the dice fans, and people who like Monopoly.

Carcassonne?(2-5 players, 6 with Inns and Cathedrals expansion)

Carcassonne was my 3rd game, and my first exposure to meeples. ?Just for the meeples themselves, the game is worth a look. ?Carcassonne is a fairly basic game to teach players. ?Drawing a tile, playing it to the board, and adding one of your tokens to the tile is fairly simple. ?There are some choices, and a lot of unique arrangements you can make with the tiles. ?Building a map is a fun thing for people of all ages to see, especially when it comes together. Can Carcassonne get a bit aggressive? ?Sure, but that's true of most games. ?Carcassonne is a great introduction to people who enjoy puzzles, and long term strategy.

Dominion?(2-4 players, up to 6 with Intrigue)
I first played Dominion in 2009, and I was instantly hooked. ?I bought it for my birthday, and it started a bit of an obsession. ?I've always been a fan of card games, I dabbled in Star Trek CCG and Pokemon, so I liked seeing cards interact. ?The idea of deckbuilding always intrigued me, but as a kid, I never had the money to have the best cards or a lot of the good cards, so I knew I'd never be great. ?Dominion changes that idea. ?It's deckbuilding, but the whole game is building your deck. ?Everyone starts with the same deck of 10 cards - 3 victory points, and 7 money. ?You have to use these cards to buy better cards, slowly making your deck bigger and better. ?The base game comes with 25 unique kingdom cards, and you play with 10 in each game. ?This gives a lot of variety and makes most games feel different than the last one you played. ?If someone is a fan of a CCG like Magic the Gathering, or Yu-Gi-Oh! this is something for them to look into. ?They might just appreciate not having to spend $100+ every few months to get new cards.

Ticket to Ride (2-5 players)
Ticket to Ride is the first game I ever bought for myself. ?I played the German board (Marklin version) with my gaming family. ?That's the most complicated version of TtR, but I liked the core. ?I decided to get the US map, since it would involve the least amount of hunting for odd cities, and thus save time. ?I'm so glad I bought TtR. ?It's currently my 3rd most played game (if you count all the different maps, 4th if you don't) and I don't see that changing. ?It's a game I can play with just about anyone. ?On a player's turn they have 3 options, really only 2 that come up every time. ?You either take cards or play cards. ?The third option is taking more destination tickets, but that isn't something to do every turn. ?The scoring is fantastically simple, you get points for trains on the board, you gain points for completed tickets, you lose points for tickets you don't complete. ? ?It's hard to nail down a particular group of people that would be best suited for the game. ?I don't want to cop-out and say everyone, so instead I think that Ticket is a great way to get people who used to play games as a kid, but lost interest due to a plethora of things, back into gaming.

Price Wars
No, not a game, just time to talk money. Remember these are Amazon prices. ?Better prices can be found if you hunt around a bit.
Catan ~ $34 for the base, $47 for the base+expansion
Carcassonne ~ $22
Dominion ~ $31
Ticket to Ride ~ $37

Like all these categories, this comes down to the budget pick, and the pick you want to have around.
Carcassonne takes the budget pick, but if you're willing to go up a bit, get Dominion.
As for the game to have around, my winner is still Ticket to Ride. ?It works for the widest range of people, and trains are just fun. ?If you want to take a 2nd in any category, I'd encourage you to take it here and also get Dominion.

These 4 games are fairly common these days. ?I think Target even carries at least Ticket and Catan, maybe more, haven't checked lately. ?Since they are common, you can generally find someone who owns a copy of at least one of these and ask to try it out. ?I like all 4 of these games, you can't go wrong with any of them.
